The devaluation index

In FY2026 (April 2025 – March 2026), 85.6% of the changes we logged to Indian card and loyalty programmes went against cardholders: 48 cuts against 12 improvements, weighted by severity. That is one cut every 7.6 days. The highest of the 4 financial years on record with at least 20 logged changes.

It has risen every financial year for 3 years running: FY2024 65.7% → FY2025 76.7% → FY2026 85.6%.

How the index works

Method v1.0, fixed before the first edition. The version changes the day any rule does.

The formula
cut share = cut points ÷ (cut points + improvement points) × 100
cut points = sum of severity weights of changes that went AGAINST the reader
severity    = major 3 · moderate 1.5 · minor 0.6
against = devaluation, fee rise, lounge cut, hostile partner change
for = improvement, launch, a partner added
basket ₹ = sum over programmes valued at the open of
(value at close − value at open) × 10000
  • Period: the Indian financial year, and its four quarters.
  • Window: by the date a change takes effect; start exclusive, end inclusive.
  • Weighting: every programme counts once; changes are weighted by severity.
  • Basket: 10,000 points per programme, fixed on the period's first day.
  • An edition needs 10 changes and a closed period; a superlative needs 20.

Worked on FY2026: 60 changes, 48 cuts worth 85.8 points and 12 improvements worth 14.4. 85.8 ÷ (85.8 + 14.4) = 85.6%.

Five decisions behind it

1. A share, not a count. "N devaluations this year" measures how hard we looked as much as what happened: the archive holds one change for 1961 and over a hundred for the current year. A ratio does not rise just because we logged more. The severity weights are the same ones the programme pages' risk grades use (methodology).

2. The Indian financial year. 1 April to 31 March, the frame RBI and every listed bank report in, with every label spelling the months out. A change counts in the period it takes effect; one announced earlier is listed under "announced in this period". Only a closed period gets an edition.

3. Every programme counts once. Weighting by the cards that earn a programme was refused: the two biggest ₹ cuts in the archive hit Marriott Bonvoy (1 card) and Avios (BA / Qatar / Finnair) (4 cards), against 67 for RBL Reward Points, so that weight would shrink the biggest events to nothing. Weighting by cardholders needs numbers nobody publishes. Each edition prints the cards and routes behind each move instead, so you can re-weight by hand.

4. What counts. Cuts and improvements are both counted and shown. Fee rises and lounge cuts count in the share but never in the rupees. The ₹ figure is a floor. A move caused by the rupee shifting against a programme pegged to a foreign currency is real and is labelled "re-mark", not "event".

5. Two counts, never mixed. The share counts changes: one change is one, however many programmes it touches. The ₹ figure counts programme moves against a basket fixed at the open; a programme first valued mid-period is left out and counted.

What it cannot see
  • It is not weighted by what readers hold. Nobody publishes Indian membership by programme, so every programme counts once.
  • It is not a forecast. A programme's forward risk grade is a different measure, on the methodology page.
  • It is not the size of the damage: the ₹ figure is, and it is conservative. The worst single move on record is Marriott Bonvoy, 2022-03-29, −47.6%: −₹5,900 on 10,000 points.
  • The direction of each change comes from the site's one classifier, edge cases included: a regulator freezing a bank's card sales reads as a partner change with no hostile word in it, so it counts as an improvement. We publish the classifier rather than patch it for one page.
  • Editions are recomputed on every build. A programme we start valuing today with history back to 2015 can restate a past edition, as a real index restates.
Reproduce it
  • The change log above: 436 dated, sourced changes, 1961-01-01 to 2026-10-26 in force (2026-12-17 including announced ones).
  • The dated point values behind points values: 165 programmes, 246 dated ₹-per-point marks, 23 of them moves.
  • Both are open files in the site's public repository, and one module computes every figure here from them.
