Kotak halves dynamic currency conversion on Dream Different, 3.5% to 2%

The one clause in Kotak's 31 July 2026 cardholder-agreement revision that goes the reader's way: the Dream Different's dynamic currency conversion fee drops from 3.5% to 2% on 1 September 2026. It will change almost nobody's bill, and here is why.

Kotak’s Revised Cardholder Agreement Schedule (PDF modified 31 July 2026) is mostly a bill for Dream Different holders: a ₹424 joining fee with no waiver from 1 September 2026, a ₹170 cancellation fee inside 90 days, a cashback programme with unpublished rates. One row in it moves the other way. The Dynamic Currency Conversion Fee line now reads: “Waived for Kotak Solitaire Credit Card. 2% for Dream Different Credit Card effective 1st Sept, 2026” — against the 3.5% Kotak charges on every other card in its deck.

We log it because a tracker that only records cuts is a tracker nobody should trust. But size it honestly, because this is a smaller buff than the percentage suggests.

DCC is not the forex markup

Two different fees apply to a foreign swipe, and only one of them prices your trip.

The foreign-currency transaction markup is what the bank adds when it converts a foreign-currency charge to rupees. Dream Different’s is already 2% — the same agreement lists it beside Kotak Infinite, White Reserve, the Air+ cards, the fee-paying Privy League Signature and the Kotak811 Super Money card, against “3.50% for all other Cards”. That number does not change on 1 September, and it is the reason to hold this card at all.

Dynamic currency conversion is the surcharge you pay when a foreign terminal or website offers to bill you in rupees instead of the local currency and you accept. It is an offer you should decline every single time, on every card, because the merchant’s exchange rate is worse than the bank’s before any fee is added. A card that charges 2% instead of 3.5% for accepting a bad deal is a card that makes a mistake cheaper — it is not a card that has become cheaper to use abroad.

Net of the two rows

Across the same revision, on the same date: Dream Different goes from ₹0 to ₹424 to open, and saves 1.5 percentage points on a transaction type you should never accept. Take the card for the 2% forex markup and the NIL renewal. Take the DCC cut as a footnote, and keep saying “charge me in local currency”.
