KrisFlyer puts a miles floor under award search

For as long as anyone has been doing this, the first move on a Star Alliance redemption was free: open a KrisFlyer account, search availability, then decide whether to move points into it. On 21 July 2026 that stopped working. Members with thin balances started hitting an error instead of an award calendar, and the reports came in from everywhere at once.

Singapore Airlines has since confirmed it is deliberate. Its statement to The MileLion:

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has introduced additional safeguards on KrisFlyer award search to ensure a smooth and reliable experience for KrisFlyer members, and to protect our systems from automated and repetitive search activity that can impact the user experience for our members.

And on the number itself:

We regret that we are unable to share the specific thresholds or criteria, as these are part of our internal security controls.

So there is no published threshold, and we are not going to print one we cannot source. Community testing first clustered around 1,000 miles, then drifted nearer 1,500 as more reports arrived — which is roughly what you would expect from a control that is not a clean cut-off. Treat “about a thousand miles, and maybe more” as the working assumption, not a rule.

What it costs an Indian points holder

The target is obvious enough: burner accounts feeding automated availability scrapers. The collateral damage is the free lookup, and that is the bit that mattered here.

KrisFlyer has been the default window onto Star Alliance award space — the one program almost everyone could query, whether or not they held miles in it. The standard sequence before moving Axis EDGE Miles, Amex Membership Rewards or HDFC points into Singapore was: check the calendar first, transfer second. Transfers into KrisFlyer are one-way and can take days; nobody sensible sends miles on faith.

That order is now inverted for anyone starting from zero. You need miles in the account before you can see what they buy — which, for a new-to-KrisFlyer cardholder, means committing a transfer to a program whose availability you have not been allowed to check.

Workarounds, honestly

Booking is untouched — this is a search restriction, not a redemption one — and SIA says most members should not be affected. If you already hold a KrisFlyer balance, nothing about your day changes.

If you are starting cold, the Star Alliance space itself has not moved: partner programs still see the same seats, so an award search on another Star program you already hold remains a serviceable proxy for what is bookable, even though the price you pay will be KrisFlyer’s own. What has gone is the ability to confirm it on Singapore’s own site before you commit the transfer.

What moves is your sequencing: if KrisFlyer is a program you expect to use, seed the account with a token transfer before you need it, so the search box still works on the day you actually have a trip to plan.
