Kotak's Dream Different joining fee goes ₹250 → ₹424 and the waiver disappears
Kotak's Revised Cardholder Agreement, dated 31 July 2026, prices the Dream Different door at ₹424 from 1 September 2026 and retires the ₹18,000-credit-limit waiver that made the card free to get. A ₹170 cancellation fee inside 90 days lands the same day.
The Kotak811 Dream Different is an FD-backed entry card whose whole pitch is that it costs nothing: a ₹10,000 fixed deposit, no income proof, no credit score, and a 2% foreign-currency markup that undercuts India’s 3.5% norm. Kotak’s Revised Cardholder Agreement Schedule (reference KOTMITC/07/2026/Version 2, PDF last modified 31 July 2026) changes the “costs nothing” part — in the same fee-table row, two columns apart.
What the row says
The joining column reads “Effective 1st Sept 2026, ₹424”, against the standing “NIL / ₹3500 for Metal Dream Different Credit Card” and the Key Fact Statement’s ₹250. The waiver column beside it reads “Effective 1st Sept 2026, no waiver will be applicable” — which retires the “Credit Limit should be >= ₹18,000 on date of card activation” escape that today makes the card free for almost everyone who qualifies.
Read the two together, because the headline understates it. ₹250 to ₹424 is a 70% rise. The real move is ₹0 to ₹424 for the majority of applicants, who clear the ₹18,000 bar and currently pay nothing at all. The annual fee stays NIL, so this is a one-time cost at the door — but on a card sold as free, a door fee changes who the card is for.
The clause outside the fee table
A third dated change sits in the same PDF and not in the fee table: “Effective 1st Sept, 2026, Cancellation Fee of ₹170 will be charged for Dream Different Credit Cards cancelled within 90 days of issuance.” A ₹424 entry fee plus a ₹170 exit fee inside 90 days is a churn tax, aimed precisely at the reader who opens an FD-backed card to try a bank and closes it once the score moves.
A fourth change is announced without numbers. Section F says that “with effect from Credit Card billing cycle commencing in September 2026, Cashback Program on Dream Different Credit Card will come into effect”, and defers the rates to “refer website”. That is the only one of the four that could change what the card earns rather than what it costs, and until Kotak publishes the rates there is nothing to model — so we have modelled nothing.
What to do
If you want this card, apply before 1 September 2026. The ₹250 fee, and the ₹18,000-credit-limit waiver that makes it ₹0, are live until 31 August. From 1 September it is ₹424, no waiver, and a ₹170 penalty for changing your mind inside 90 days.
The card itself is unchanged where it matters: the 2% forex markup, the NIL renewal, the fixed deposit that keeps earning interest. It goes from free-to-get to ₹424-to-get, which for a card whose only serious use is a cheap foreign-spend rail is still a fair trade — just not the one Kotak811 advertised.
