United MileagePlus starts charging non-cardholders more for the same award
From 2 April 2026, United co-brand cardholders pay at least 10% fewer miles on United awards. Indian banks can transfer into MileagePlus but cannot issue that card, so miles sent from India always pay the higher price.

Devaluation · United Airlines
Before
One award price on United metal for every MileagePlus member; general members earned miles on Basic Economy
After
Holders of a United co-brand card pay at least 10% fewer miles on United and United Express awards (at least 15% with Premier status) and get wider Polaris Saver access; general members earn nothing on Basic Economy without a card
From 2 April 2026, United MileagePlus has two price lists for the same seat.
- With a United co-brand credit card: at least 10% fewer miles for a standard award on United and United Express, at least 15% fewer with Premier status as well, and more Polaris Saver business-class space.
- Without one: the full price. A general member flying Basic Economy now earns no miles at all.
Every United co-brand card is issued in the US. You cannot get one with an Indian address, so miles you transfer from an Indian bank always pay the full price. Six Indian card currencies transfer into MileagePlus: HDFC Reward Points, HSBC Reward Points, SBI Travel Credits and Kotak Solitaire Air Miles at 2:1, Axis EDGE Miles at 1:2 (one EDGE Mile becomes two United miles), and Axis EDGE Rewards at 5:2. None of them comes with the discount.
How much it matters to you depends on what you book. The discount covers only flights on United and United Express. Partner awards on Star Alliance airlines, which is why most Indians hold United miles, cost the same with or without the card. If you use MileagePlus to book Star Alliance partners, nothing changed for you. If you were saving for a United-operated Polaris seat, a US cardholder now pays at least 10% less than you for the same seat and gets first access to the Saver space.
