Amex India pauses all new card applications

The Platinum Charge and Platinum Reserve — the only two doors Amex reopened in September 2025 — are shut. Every proprietary card now shows Learn More and no Apply Now.

American Express India is not taking new customers. A banner now sits where the Apply Now button belongs, on the all-cards grid and on the individual product pages: “We are temporarily pausing the acceptance of new card applications in India as we make planned updates to our technology platforms for domestic card issuing operations.” We read it on 28 August 2026 across three Amex URLs — the all-cards page, the Platinum Reserve page and the Platinum Card page — and all six proprietary cards render “Learn More” with no application route: Platinum Card, Platinum Reserve, Platinum Travel, Gold Card, Membership Rewards Card, SmartEarn. The material change is the top two. The Platinum Charge (₹66,000) and Platinum Reserve (₹10,000) were the only Amex India cards still open — the pair that came back when the March 2025 freeze partially lifted on 24 September 2025, while Gold, MRCC, Platinum Travel and SmartEarn stayed shut. Both have now joined them. There is no door into Amex India at any price.

Note what Amex has not said. The banner carries no start date and no end date, there is no press release, and neither CardInsider nor Live From A Lounge has reported it — both are running the Reward Multiplier story instead. So every date here is the day we observed the page, not an announcement day we inferred, and we are claiming nothing about when this began. The word Amex chose is “temporarily”, which is why all eight of these cards are filed as paused rather than closed: the terms have not moved, and existing cardmembers are not addressed by the banner at all. One echo worth flagging without over-reading: the stated reason — updating “technology platforms for domestic card issuing operations” — is nearly the same sentence Amex gave for the March 2025 freeze, when it said it needed to “integrate new platforms for our domestic Card issuing operations”. Amex has not said the two are the same programme of work, and we are not going to say it for them.

Our take: the timing is the story. Amex is closing the front door in the same month it announced it is switching off Reward Multiplier on 30 September — the 25,000-bonus-MR-a-month portal that was the single best reason to start an Indian Membership Rewards balance. A card you cannot apply for and a portal that is about to stop paying are not a pipeline. If you already hold one, nothing has changed for you today and the transfer partners remain excellent; if you were waiting for the Platinum Charge funnel to reopen, you are now waiting on two unpublished dates instead of one. Watch the product pages, not the press — that is where Amex India has put every one of these announcements.
