Amex guts Platinum Travel's milestone ladder and gates its lounges
From 10 September the ₹1.9 lakh milestone disappears and the ₹7 lakh rung loses 22,500 points for a bigger Taj voucher; from 1 October, lounge access needs ₹1 lakh of spend in the previous quarter.
American Express has told Platinum Travel cardholders that the card’s spend milestones are being rewritten from 10 September 2026, and that its domestic lounge access gets a spend condition from 1 October 2026. Neither change is live yet. Everything on our card page is still what you get today.
Platinum Travel is a milestone card wearing a travel costume — the base earn is a forgettable 1%, and the ladder carries the whole proposition. That ladder is what is being cut.
The ₹1.9 lakh rung disappears. It paid 7,500 bonus Membership Rewards points. From 10 September it pays nothing.
The ₹4 lakh rung survives untouched at 10,000 bonus points.
The ₹7 lakh rung trades points for vouchers. The 22,500 bonus points go; the Taj voucher doubles from ₹10,000 to a ₹20,000 Taj Experiences e-gift card.
At our house value of ₹0.50 per Membership Rewards point, that is a worse deal at every rung. Clear the full ladder to ₹7 lakh today and you collect 40,000 bonus points plus a ₹10,000 voucher — ₹30,000. After 10 September the same ₹7 lakh collects 10,000 points plus the ₹20,000 voucher, or ₹25,000. Stop at ₹4 lakh and you go from ₹8,750 to ₹5,000. Stop at ₹1.9 lakh and you go from ₹3,750 to nothing at all.
Which rung you sit on is decided by the posting date, not the transaction date: Amex says spends posted on or before 9 September earn under the existing structure, and spends posted from 10 September under the new one.
The lounge change may be the sharper one, and it cuts the other way. Platinum Travel’s eight domestic visits a year, capped at two a quarter, currently arrive unconditionally with the card. From 1 October you unlock up to two visits in a quarter only by having spent ₹1 lakh in the previous calendar quarter. The ceiling has not moved — the floor has appeared. Spend under ₹4 lakh a year, spread evenly, and a ₹5,000 travel card stops opening lounge doors entirely.
So the milestone cut takes from high spenders and the lounge gate takes from everyone else, which between them is most of the reason to hold this card.
One honest note on sourcing. Amex has communicated this to cardholders, and LiveFromALounge published the notice on 10 August with the figures above, but Amex has not yet updated the documents it publishes. The General T&C PDF that carries the milestone ladder still reads the March 2026 structure — 22,500 points and a ₹10,000 Taj voucher at ₹7 lakh — and its lounge clause still carries no spend condition. We have added that PDF to the documents we watch, so the day it changes we will know. Until then this post and the two tracker entries behind it rest on the cardholder notice as reported, and we will re-source them to Amex’s own document when it appears.
Nothing about the card’s numbers has changed on this site, because nothing has changed for a cardholder yet. What changed is that we now know what is coming.
