Amex ends Membership Rewards pooling — now from 15 November 2026

American Express ends Membership Rewards pooling from 15 November 2026 (moved from 11 October), with each card keeping its own balance. This change affects cardmembers who hold multiple Amex cards, making it harder to combine points for transfers.

Before

One Membership Rewards account per Basic Cardmember: points earned on every enrolled proprietary Amex card pooled into a single balance, so two cards' earn could be combined into one transfer to a partner programme.

From 15 Nov 2026

One balance per card. A cardmember holding two or more proprietary Amex cards has each card's points maintained separately, with no transfer between cards. Supplementary-card earn still consolidates into its Basic Card.

Update, 10 October 2026: Amex moved this change from 11 October to 15 November 2026, per its own India consumer-updates page. The text below reflects the new date.

From 15 November 2026, American Express will end Membership Rewards pooling in India. Each card will keep its own balance, and points earned on every enrolled proprietary Amex card will no longer be pooled into a single balance. This means that a cardmember holding two or more proprietary Amex cards will have each card’s points maintained separately, with no transfer between cards. Supplementary-card earn will still consolidate into its Basic Card.

This change will affect cardmembers who hold multiple Amex cards, as they will no longer be able to combine points from different cards for a single transfer to a partner programme. The change is part of a technology upgrade to the account experience, according to Amex.

Our take: cardmembers with multiple Amex cards should review their points balances and plan their transfers before 15 November 2026, when the change takes effect. They should consider transferring points from one card to a partner programme before the change, to avoid stranded odd balances on a second card.
