Chennai to Kolkata on points

MAA → CCU great-circle 1,385 km · 861 mi — short-haul domestic trunk, ~2¼ hours 2 programs priced as of

9,000 points for 861 miles, and not one of them spendable on mainline metal. Air India's full April-2026 route table does price Chennai–Kolkata — 9,000 in economy, 19,000 in business, both untouched by an overhaul that cut 110 other economy routes — but Air India mainline left this pair long ago: Chennai's operator table lists AI to Delhi, Mumbai and Madurai only, Kolkata's to Delhi and Mumbai. The metal is Air India Express, buyable with Maharaja Points since 21-May-2026 and economy-only, so the 19,000-point business cell prices a cabin the aeroplane doesn't have, and every mainline detour — 2.2× the great circle via Delhi, 1.9× via Mumbai — is far outside any sane maximum-permitted-mileage. At ₹0.80 a point the economy seat is ₹7,200 against ₹5–7k cash on a route IndiGo floods: the rare Maharaja domestic cell that loses to the card that minted it. Two options, one a first-hand chart read.

Economy

Every economy option on this corridor is dynamic-priced — no honest number to crown. The rows below say what we know.

Program Metal / routing Points Surcharge All-in ₹ vs play
IndiGo BluChip IndiGo nonstop — BluChip, dynamic (revenue-priced) ~10,400 est. ₹5,200
Air India Maharaja Points Air India Express nonstop (AI mainline left this pair) — booked on the AI-designator codeshare, economy only ~9,000 est. ₹7,200

All-in ₹ = points × the program's house value (valuation index) + the sourced one-way surcharge; a dash means the carrier doesn't publish it and the ranking counts it ₹0 — the row's note carries the caveat. That surcharge is the airline's own cash charge on an award — YQ, as the notes below call it — and it is not the fuel-surcharge waiver your credit card advertises: that one hands back a hundred rupees or two at a petrol pump, this one runs to tens of thousands and decides whether the award is worth taking at all. “Dynamic” and estimated (~… est.) rows never compete for the play — the crown is always a verified, bookable price. Feed-ins come from the same transfer data as the optimizer, multi-hop chains included.

IndiGo BluChip

IndiGo nonstop — BluChip, dynamic (revenue-priced)

IndiGo

IndiGo runs the frequency Chennai–Kolkata, but BluChip has no award chart — redemptions track the live fare at a dynamic ₹0.40–0.60 per BluChip, minimum 500, taxes cash-only. On a corridor whose fixed award already prices above cash, the revenue-priced one is simply the cash ticket wearing points.

Estimate IndiGo BluChip is revenue-linked ~Rs0.50/pt; ~= typical one-way IndiGo economy fare / Rs0.50 for ~861 mi - a rupee offset that moves 1:1 with the live fare. Own-metal only, no partners.

Air India Express nonstop (AI mainline left this pair) — booked on the AI-designator codeshare, economy only

Air India Express

Held flat at 9,000 through the April-2026 overhaul — one of the 68 economy routes that didn't move. ₹7,200 at house value against ₹5–7k cash, which makes this a chart cell to read, not a plan to make. Air India Express seats went redeemable on 21-May-2026 across 55+ IX destinations. No business row: the published 19,000 cell has no cabin to sit in on Express metal, and the mainline one-stops fly nearly twice the great circle. Taxes and passenger service fees are cash on top, unpublished as a fixed figure.

Estimate Air India publishes no award chart. Its own Points Calculator states that “Fares indicated above are dependent on the time of booking and seat availability”, and Maharaja Club prices every award either as a Value fare (the discounted rate for booking well in advance) or as a higher Prime fare closer to departure. This number is the Value-fare floor as sampled after the April-2026 repricing — not a published chart cell: Value space is not always available on a given flight, and the same seat prices higher once it is gone. Pricing model re-verified against Air India’s Maharaja Club T&C and Points Calculator on 2026-08-09.
