Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied: it earns nothing on fuel here, so that spend is dropped, not paid at the headline, and stops pacing milestones and the waiver. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

Breaks even only by erasing its fee at ₹3,000 a month

At ₹3,000 a month — ₹36,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹100 gross (earn ₹100) against a fee of ₹0 — the ₹99 is waived, the spend having cleared ₹25,000 a year = ₹100 net — the first rung at or above ₹0. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.

RuPay

Why #239 Every reward bucket caps at 500 CashPoints a calendar month, so the whole card is worth at most ₹375 a month however much runs through it — and HDFC's advertised percentages are point counts, not rupees.

₹99 + GST
Annual fee1
₹25,000 spend
Fee waiver

This card's CashPoints are contractually ₹0.25, not the ₹1.00 house value: HDFC's own T&C says "CashPoints can be utilized towards CashBack redemption against the statement at the rate of 1 CashPoint = ₹0.25 for HDFC Bank UPI RuPay Credit Card", and the same ₹0.25 applies through net banking or SmartBuy flights, hotels and the catalogue. A minimum of 500 points is needed to redeem anything, and no more than 50% of a booking can be paid in points. Our reward rate already prices the ₹0.25 in.

The take

Read this card's advertised rates as point counts and it makes sense; read them as percentages and you will be wrong by a factor of four. HDFC's own terms work the arithmetic out for you: spend ₹9,000 in the 3% bucket and you earn 270 CashPoints, which is three points per ₹100, and one point is contractually ₹0.25. So the real rates are 0.75% on groceries, supermarkets, dining and every PayZapp transaction, 0.5% on utility bills through MCC 4900, and 0.25% on everything else. Then the caps, which are the whole product: 500 CashPoints a calendar month in each of the three buckets. The best any holder can earn is 1,500 points a month — ₹375 — and to reach even that you need roughly ₹16,700 of groceries and dining, ₹25,000 of utility bills and ₹50,000 of other spend in the same month. Against ₹99 waived at ₹25,000 of annual spend, that is still a fine trade, and the real point of the card is not the rewards at all: it is a virtual RuPay card that links to GPay, PhonePe, Paytm or BHIM, so a kirana QR code becomes a credit transaction with up to 50 days of float. The exclusion list is long and it matters — fuel, rent, insurance, education, government payments, wallet and gift-card loads, all EMI and cash advances earn nothing, and there is no fuel surcharge waiver on UPI because there is no fuel surcharge on UPI. It is also not a card you can get on its own: HDFC issues it only as an additional floater against a primary Visa, Mastercard or Diners card you already hold.

Your renewal — keep, downgrade or cancel

This card reaches break-even by ERASING its fee, not by out-earning it: the waiver is the decision.

₹25,000 annual spend erases that fee
₹3,000/mo is where the waiver, not the earn, saves it

₹99/yr at stake · 5 spend bands

The charge ₹99/yr

The waiver ₹25,000 of spend in the year before renewal — about ₹2,083 a month — and the renewal fee is not charged.

Break-even ₹3,000 a month — ₹36,000 a year — is where this card's value crosses its fee, and it gets there by erasing the fee at the waiver rather than out-earning it.

At your spend

₹700 a year, net of the fee, at ₹3,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹1,400 a year, net of the fee, at ₹6,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹1,300 a year, net of the fee, at ₹12,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹1,100 a year, net of the fee, at ₹36,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹1,100 a year, net of the fee, at ₹60,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

The downgrade

HDFC Bank publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.

What has changed under this card

  • 1 Sep 2026 SmartBuy moves Amazon Pay gift cards to 1X under Insta Deals issuer-wide
  • 1 Jul 2026 HDFC caps SmartBuy brand-voucher rewards issuer-wide

The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.

What's good

  • A virtual RuPay credit card that links to any UPI app — GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, PayZapp, Mobikwik or Slice
  • 0.75% on groceries, supermarkets, dining and all PayZapp transactions (3 CashPoints per ₹100)
  • 0.5% on utility bills and 0.25% on everything else
  • ₹99 joining and renewal fee, waived from year two on ₹25,000 of annual spend
  • Up to 50 days of interest-free credit on a UPI payment
  • No documents required to apply if you already hold an HDFC credit card
  • CashPoints redeem against the statement at ₹0.25 apiece from 500 points upward

Watch out

  • HDFC's "3% / 2% / 1%" are POINT counts, not rupees — at ₹0.25 a point the real rates are 0.75%, 0.5% and 0.25%
  • Each bucket caps at 500 CashPoints a calendar month, so the entire card is worth at most ₹375 a month
  • Fuel, rent, insurance, education, government payments, wallet and gift-card loads (MCC 6540), all EMI and cash advances earn nothing
  • The 3% bucket only recognises MCC 5411, 5812 and 5814 — a grocer coded anything else earns the 1% rate
  • Only transactions of ₹100 and above earn CashPoints at all
  • It cannot be taken as a standalone card — HDFC issues it only as an additional floater against a primary Visa, Mastercard or Diners card
  • It is virtual only; no physical card is ever delivered
  • Since 1 October 2025 a 1% fee applies to fuel transactions above ₹15,000, capped at ₹4,999 a transaction, and no fuel surcharge waiver exists on UPI
  • CashPoints lapse two years after accumulation, and no more than 50% of a flight or hotel booking can be paid with them

What these points actually fly

No live transfer route takes HDFC Bank CashPoints into a programme that publishes an award chart. These points buy catalogue and portal redemptions, not award seats — so this page has no flight to show you, and will not invent one.

What earns, what doesn't

14 sourced rules · 7 pay zero

HDFC's own T&C for this card (27-Mar-2025) prints the whole grid as three buckets, each with its own 500-CashPoint monthly ceiling: 3% on groceries, supermarkets, dining and PayZapp; 2% on utilities; 1% on everything else. Read "3%" as three POINTS per ₹100, not three rupees — a CashPoint redeems at ₹0.25 against the statement, so the headline 3% is 0.75% of money and the ceiling is 500 points, about ₹4 a month per bucket at best. The same T&C prints one exclusion list that applies to all three buckets, and it is long. Transactions under ₹100 earn nothing at all.

Fuel excluded — Zero CashPoints — "Fuel Spends" heads HDFC's exclusion list and its own worked example spells it out: of ₹15,000 spent, "Fuel & EMI spends won't be rewarded CashPoints"
Rent & property management excluded — Zero CashPoints — "Rent Payments" is on the T&C's exclusion list for every bucket
Government / tax excluded — Zero CashPoints — the same "Education and Govt Related Transactions" line
Utilities (electricity/water/gas) capped — 2 CashPoints per ₹100 (0.5% at ₹0.25 a point) with its OWN 500-CashPoint calendar-month ceiling, separate from the 3% bucket — about ₹25,000 of bills a month, worth ₹125
Insurance excluded — Zero CashPoints — "Insurance payments" is on the exclusion list. Note this differs from HDFC's Reward Points programme, where insurance earns to a 10,000-point monthly cap
Education excluded — Zero CashPoints — "Education and Govt Related Transactions" is one line on the exclusion list, so unlike HDFC's RP cards there is no fee-free direct-to-institution route that still earns
Wallet loads excluded — Zero CashPoints — "Wallet loads / Gift or Prepaid Card load/ Voucher purchase", and the T&C names the code: "transactions carried out through the Merchant Category Code (MCC) of 6540 (as defined by RuPay) will not be considered for CashPoints even if it is from these merchant categories"
Groceries & supermarkets capped — 3 CashPoints per ₹100 (0.75% at ₹0.25 a point) on groceries and supermarkets, sharing a 500-CashPoint calendar-month ceiling with dining and PayZapp — about ₹16,700 of combined spend exhausts it, after which grocery earns nothing more that month. HDFC reads the category from the MCC RuPay assigns: "If in case the MCC is not available in the set-up, such transactions will not qualify for the benefit"
Dining & food delivery capped — 3 CashPoints per ₹100 (0.75%), sharing the same 500-CashPoint monthly ceiling with groceries and PayZapp — roughly ₹16,700 of combined spend a month
Travel (airlines, hotels, transit) capped — Not on the exclusion list — 1 CashPoint per ₹100 in the "other spends" bucket, capped at 500 CashPoints a calendar month
Telecom capped — Not on the exclusion list, so it earns — 1 CashPoint per ₹100 in the "other spends" bucket, or the 2% utility rung if HDFC bills the telco as a utility, either way inside a 500-CashPoint monthly ceiling (flag: the T&C names "Utility spends" without listing its MCCs)
Jewellery / gold capped — Not on this card's exclusion list — unlike the Swiggy HDFC card, which does exclude jewellery — so it earns 1 CashPoint per ₹100 inside the 500-point "other spends" ceiling
Forex / international spends not applicable
UPI (RuPay-on-UPI only) capped — UPI is the whole point of the card — it is a RuPay product built to link to a UPI app — and a UPI payment earns whichever of the three buckets its MCC lands in, each capped at 500 CashPoints a calendar month. The exclusion list still applies over the UPI rail, and no transaction under ₹100 earns
EMI conversions / merchant EMI excluded — Zero CashPoints on "All types of EMI transactions (EasyEMI/SmartEMI, Dial-an-EMI etc)" — named on the exclusion list and repeated in HDFC's own worked example
  • Fuel · excluded Zero CashPoints — "Fuel Spends" heads HDFC's exclusion list and its own worked example spells it out: of ₹15,000 spent, "Fuel & EMI spends won't be rewarded CashPoints"
  • Rent & property management · excluded Zero CashPoints — "Rent Payments" is on the T&C's exclusion list for every bucket
  • Wallet loads · excluded Zero CashPoints — "Wallet loads / Gift or Prepaid Card load/ Voucher purchase", and the T&C names the code: "transactions carried out through the Merchant Category Code (MCC) of 6540 (as defined by RuPay) will not be considered for CashPoints even if it is from these merchant categories"
  • Utilities (electricity/water/gas) · capped 2 CashPoints per ₹100 (0.5% at ₹0.25 a point) with its OWN 500-CashPoint calendar-month ceiling, separate from the 3% bucket — about ₹25,000 of bills a month, worth ₹125

Does your spend count toward the fee waiver?

not published — and we say which

₹25,000 a year is the bar that waives the ₹99 fee. A different question from the one above — earning points and counting toward a threshold are separate rules, and issuers write them separately.

Not published. HDFC Bank states what the HDFC Bank UPI RuPay earns and does not earn, but has not published which spend categories count toward the fee waiver — the ₹25,000 bar. We won't guess it from the earn table or from a sibling card: Axis published three cards' rules on one day and all three lists differed. If you hold this card and have it in writing from the issuer, send us the document and we'll source it.

An existing HDFC cardholder adds it through MyCards or PayZapp with no documents; anyone else has to take a Visa, Mastercard or Diners HDFC card first and ask for the UPI RuPay card alongside it. The fine print

7 of 7 MITC rows published

What the MITC actually says — the rates, fees and cutoffs the brochure skips.

Forex markup 3.5% + GST, the MITC’s standard FCC column — the exceptions it names are the premium cards above this one (Infinia 2%, 6E Rewards XL 2.50%). A separate dynamic-currency-conversion markup of 1.75% applies from 15-May-2026 on a foreign transaction billed in rupees
APR 3.75%/mo (45%/yr) on revolving credit and cash advances — note that the MEGA SAVER sibling in the same fee cell is one of six cards HDFC puts in the 1.99% tier, and this card is not
Late fee Nil ≤₹100; ₹100 (₹101–500); ₹500 (₹501–1,000); ₹600 (₹1,001–5,000); ₹750 (₹5,001–10,000); ₹900 (₹10,001–25,000); ₹1,100 (₹25,001–50,000); ₹1,300 (>₹50,000) — and from 20-Jun-2026 the same slab applies to a missed EMI instalment
Cash advance 2.5% of the amount withdrawn or ₹500, whichever is higher
Add-on card Lifetime free
Overlimit 2.5% of the overlimit amount, minimum ₹550 — and only on the cardholder’s explicit consent, which the MITC now makes a precondition of the facility rather than a courtesy
Redemption fee ₹99 per redemption request — the MITC exempts only Infinia, Infinia Metal Edition, Diners Black Metal Edition, Diners Black and BizBlack Metal. A cashback redemption is ₹50 a time

Membership fee ₹99 to take and ₹99 to renew, waived at ₹25,000 of spend in the year — the cheapest live rung on HDFC’s shelf. It shares that cell with the Biz and Mega Saver variants, which is worth knowing because the three are NOT otherwise interchangeable: the Mega Saver is in the 1.99%/mo interest tier reserved for Infinia and the Diners Blacks, and this card is not. The fuel-surcharge waiver every other HDFC card carries does not apply here — the MITC prints “Fuel Surcharge waiver Not Applicable” against the whole UPI RuPay row. Shelf-wide charges from the same document: cash processing ₹100 for any payment made over a branch counter or at an ATM, payment return 2% of the payment amount, 1% on online skill-based gaming above ₹10,000 in a calendar month and 1% on wallet loading above ₹10,000 (both from 1-Jul-2025, each capped ₹4,999 a month), and reward points on insurance capped at 2,000 a month.

SmartBuy moves Amazon Pay gift cards to 1X under Insta Deals
Amazon Pay Gift Voucher sat in SmartBuy's accelerated tier — 'up to 5X Reward Points or 5% cashback' → 'Insta Deals: 1 % Instant Discount + 1X Reward Points' — this brand is out of the accelerated tier

The most-farmed HDFC voucher route stopped being a points play. SmartBuy's own voucher storefront now shows the Amazon Pay Gift Voucher under a new "Insta Deals" tile reading "1 % Instant Discount + 1X Reward Points", and the page's own description flipped from "up to 5X Reward Points or 5% cashback" to "up to 1X". The comparison that settles it sits on the same storefront: the Amazon Fresh voucher still carries an "Accelerated Rewards — Upto 5X Reward Points RPs / 5% Cashback" block that the Amazon Pay page no longer has, so this is one brand leaving the accelerated tier, not the tier closing. The date, honestly: the Insta Deals offer ("Flat 1% OFF", ₹10,000 monthly limit) was already live in the page's own data on 31 August 2026, the reward line still read 5X in the 1 September 16:26 UTC archive capture, and read 1X when this desk fetched the page on 2 September — so 1 September is the community's effective date sitting inside a window we can bracket from primary captures, not a figure HDFC published. The bank has announced nothing and no SmartBuy page carries a notice. Two pieces of context for the size of it: brand vouchers were already sub-capped at 3,000 accelerated points a month from 1 July 2026, and Amazon Pay vouchers disappeared from the portal entirely for stretches of July and August before returning in this shape. Flipkart and Amazon Fresh vouchers still pay the accelerated rate; the ₹10,000-a-month Amazon Pay lane now pays base earn plus the 1% instant discount.
