Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

Breaks even only by erasing its fee at ₹3,000 a month

At ₹3,000 a month — ₹36,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹100 gross (earn ₹100) against a fee of ₹0 — the ₹99 is waived, the spend having cleared ₹25,000 a year = ₹100 net — the first rung at or above ₹0. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.

3 notes on the card itself: how it is issued · the network variants · why it ranks #312

HDFC Bank · RuPay · entry

RuPay — RuPay is the point of the card, not a variant: only a RuPay credit card can be linked to a UPI app, and HDFC issues this one as a virtual card with no plastic at all.

Why #312 A second, virtual-first UPI RuPay card from HDFC on identical mechanics to the first — and the same three 500-CashPoint ceilings, which cap the entire card at ₹375 a month however much runs through it. HDFC's "3%" is three POINTS, worth 75 paise.

₹99 + GST
Annual fee1
₹25,000 spend
Fee waiver

This card's CashPoints are ₹0.25, not the ₹1.00 house value, and unusually HDFC publishes one rate for every exit: "The CashPoints earned on HDFC Bank UPI RuPay Mega Saver Credit Card can be redeemed against the statement balance at the rate of 1 CashPoint = ₹0.25", with the same ₹0.25 on the product catalogue, on SmartBuy flights and hotels, and on AirMiles. A statement redemption needs points worth at least ₹500, no more than 50% of a booking can be paid in points, and the balance dies two years after the transaction.

The take

HDFC now sells two UPI RuPay credit cards, and this is the second one: same ₹99, same virtual-only issuance, same three reward buckets, and the same trap in the advertising. Read the rates as point counts and the card makes sense; read them as percentages and you will be wrong by a factor of four. Three CashPoints per ₹100 on groceries, supermarkets, dining and every PayZapp transaction; two on utility bills; one on everything else — and a CashPoint here is contractually ₹0.25, which HDFC states plainly for all four redemption routes. So the real rates are 0.75%, 0.5% and 0.25%. The card's own savings calculator is refreshingly honest about it: put ₹20,000 through each bucket and it returns "60 cashpoints" per bucket, not sixty rupees. Then the ceilings, which are the entire product. Each bucket caps at 500 CashPoints a calendar month, so the very best a holder can earn is 1,500 points — ₹375 — and reaching even that takes roughly ₹16,700 of groceries and dining, ₹25,000 of utility bills and ₹50,000 of other spend inside the same month. Against ₹99 waived at ₹25,000 of annual spend, that is still a perfectly fine trade, and the rewards were never the point anyway: this is a virtual RuPay card that links to GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Mobikwik or Slice, so a kirana QR code becomes a credit transaction with up to 50 days of float and a 1.99% revolving rate behind it. What is excluded matters as much as what earns — rent, wallet loads, EMI, fuel, insurance and government payments earn nothing in any bucket — and nothing about the card touches an airport: no lounge, no transfer partner, no airline or hotel programme that CashPoints can reach.

Your renewal — keep, downgrade or cancel

This card reaches break-even by ERASING its fee, not by out-earning it: the waiver is the decision.

₹99/yr at stake · 5 spend bands

The charge ₹99/yr

The waiver ₹25,000 of spend in the year before renewal — about ₹2,083 a month — and the renewal fee is not charged.

Break-even ₹3,000 a month — ₹36,000 a year — is where this card's value crosses its fee, and it gets there by erasing the fee at the waiver rather than out-earning it.

At your spend

₹800 a year, net of the fee, at ₹3,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹1,500 a year, net of the fee, at ₹12,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹1,500 a year, net of the fee, at ₹36,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹1,500 a year, net of the fee, at ₹60,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

The downgrade

HDFC Bank publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.

  • 1 Sep 2026 SmartBuy moves Amazon Pay gift cards to 1X under Insta Deals issuer-wide
  • 1 Jul 2026 HDFC caps SmartBuy brand-voucher rewards issuer-wide

What the bank offers to keep you is the one fact this desk cannot compute. We are collecting those reports — dated, and only in aggregate — before publishing any: an offer one reader was made is not one you are owed. Called about this card? Tell us what they offered →

The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.

What's good

  • A virtual RuPay credit card that links to any UPI app — PayZapp, GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Mobikwik or Slice
  • 0.75% on groceries, supermarkets, dining and all PayZapp transactions (3 CashPoints per ₹100)
  • 0.5% on utility bills and 0.25% on everything else
  • ₹99 joining and renewal fee, waived from year two on ₹25,000 of annual spend
  • Up to 50 days of interest-free credit, and a low 1.99% revolving rate
  • One published redemption rate — ₹0.25 — for statement credit, SmartBuy, the catalogue and AirMiles alike

Watch out

  • HDFC's "3% / 2% / 1%" are POINT counts, not rupees — at ₹0.25 a point the real rates are 0.75%, 0.5% and 0.25%
  • Each bucket caps at 500 CashPoints a calendar month, so the entire card is worth at most ₹375 a month
  • Rent, wallet loads, EMI, fuel, insurance and government payments earn nothing in any bucket
  • It is virtual only — no physical card is ever issued
  • HDFC issues it to existing bank customers through MyCards, not as a walk-up product
  • A statement redemption needs at least ₹500 worth of points, and no more than 50% of a flight or hotel booking can be paid with them
  • CashPoints expire two years after the transaction that earned them
  • No lounge access, no transfer partner, no airline or hotel programme

What these points actually fly

No live transfer route takes HDFC Bank CashPoints into a programme that publishes an award chart. These points buy catalogue and portal redemptions, not award seats — so this page has no flight to show you, and will not invent one.

Does your spend count toward the fee waiver?

not published — and we say which

₹25,000 a year is the bar that waives the ₹99 fee. A different question from the one above — earning points and counting toward a threshold are separate rules, and issuers write them separately.

Not published. HDFC Bank states what the HDFC Bank UPI RuPay Mega Saver earns, but has not published which spend categories count toward the fee waiver — the ₹25,000 bar. We won't guess it from the earn table or from a sibling card: Axis published three cards' rules on one day and all three lists differed. If you hold this card and have it in writing from the issuer, send us the document and we'll source it.

Issued to existing HDFC Bank customers as a virtual card: HDFC's own steps are to open MyCards, check eligibility for the UPI RuPay card and apply, after which the card is issued instantly and auto-registered in MyCards. Nothing is delivered — "The HDFC Bank UPI RuPay Mega Saver Credit Card will be issued as a virtual-only card to existing bank customers; no physical card will be sent." Setting a credit-card PIN is a prerequisite before any UPI app will register the card.

HDFC Bank publishes no income or age cutoffs for this card. Blank means blank — we don't invent numbers to fill a grid.

The fine print

7 of 7 MITC rows published

What the MITC actually says — the rates, fees and cutoffs the brochure skips.

Forex markup 3.5% + GST, the MITC’s standard FCC column — the exceptions it names are the premium cards above this one (Infinia 2%, 6E Rewards XL 2.50%). A separate dynamic-currency-conversion markup of 1.75% applies from 15-May-2026 on a foreign transaction billed in rupees
APR 1.99%/mo (23.88%/yr) on revolving credit and cash advances — a ₹99 card in the tier HDFC otherwise reserves for Infinia, Infinia Metal, both Diners Blacks and BizBlack Metal, and the single most surprising line in this document
Late fee Nil ≤₹100; ₹100 (₹101–500); ₹500 (₹501–1,000); ₹600 (₹1,001–5,000); ₹750 (₹5,001–10,000); ₹900 (₹10,001–25,000); ₹1,100 (₹25,001–50,000); ₹1,300 (>₹50,000) — and from 20-Jun-2026 the same slab applies to a missed EMI instalment
Cash advance 2.5% of the amount withdrawn or ₹500, whichever is higher
Add-on card Lifetime free
Overlimit 2.5% of the overlimit amount, minimum ₹550 — and only on the cardholder’s explicit consent, which the MITC now makes a precondition of the facility rather than a courtesy
Redemption fee ₹99 per redemption request — the MITC exempts only Infinia, Infinia Metal Edition, Diners Black Metal Edition, Diners Black and BizBlack Metal. A cashback redemption is ₹50 a time

Membership fee ₹99 to take and ₹99 to renew, waived at ₹25,000 of spend in the year, in a cell shared with the plain UPI RuPay and the Biz variant. THE CARDS IN THAT CELL ARE NOT EQUIVALENT: the interest table names “UPI RuPay Mega Saver Card” in the 1.99%/mo tier alongside Infinia and the Diners Blacks, while its two cellmates revolve at 3.75%. On a ₹99 card that is a genuine anomaly and the one thing a reader carrying a balance should know. The fuel-surcharge waiver does not apply — the MITC prints “Fuel Surcharge waiver Not Applicable” against the whole UPI RuPay row. Shelf-wide charges from the same document: cash processing ₹100 for any payment made over a branch counter or at an ATM, payment return 2% of the payment amount, 1% on online skill-based gaming above ₹10,000 in a calendar month and 1% on wallet loading above ₹10,000 (both from 1-Jul-2025, each capped ₹4,999 a month), and reward points on insurance capped at 2,000 a month.

SmartBuy moves Amazon Pay gift cards to 1X under Insta Deals
Amazon Pay Gift Voucher sat in SmartBuy's accelerated tier — 'up to 5X Reward Points or 5% cashback' → 'Insta Deals: 1 % Instant Discount + 1X Reward Points' — this brand is out of the accelerated tier

The most-farmed HDFC voucher route stopped being a points play. SmartBuy's own voucher storefront now shows the Amazon Pay Gift Voucher under a new "Insta Deals" tile reading "1 % Instant Discount + 1X Reward Points", and the page's own description flipped from "up to 5X Reward Points or 5% cashback" to "up to 1X". The comparison that settles it sits on the same storefront: the Amazon Fresh voucher still carries an "Accelerated Rewards — Upto 5X Reward Points RPs / 5% Cashback" block that the Amazon Pay page no longer has, so this is one brand leaving the accelerated tier, not the tier closing. The date, honestly: the Insta Deals offer ("Flat 1% OFF", ₹10,000 monthly limit) was already live in the page's own data on 31 August 2026, the reward line still read 5X in the 1 September 16:26 UTC archive capture, and read 1X when this desk fetched the page on 2 September — so 1 September is the community's effective date sitting inside a window we can bracket from primary captures, not a figure HDFC published. The bank has announced nothing and no SmartBuy page carries a notice. Two pieces of context for the size of it: brand vouchers were already sub-capped at 3,000 accelerated points a month from 1 July 2026, and Amazon Pay vouchers disappeared from the portal entirely for stretches of July and August before returning in this shape. Flipkart and Amazon Fresh vouchers still pay the accelerated rate; the ₹10,000-a-month Amazon Pay lane now pays base earn plus the 1% instant discount.
