What it's worth to you, after the fee
Welcome: 4,000 MR on ₹15,000 of spend in 90 days
Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied: it earns nothing on utilities and fuel here, so that spend is dropped, not paid at the headline, and stops pacing milestones and the waiver. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

Breaks even only by erasing its fee at ₹15,000 a month
At ₹15,000 a month — ₹1,80,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹1,500 gross (earn ₹1,500) against a fee of ₹0 — the ₹4,500 is waived, the spend having cleared ₹1,50,000 a year = ₹1,500 net — the first rung at or above ₹0. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.

The take
On paper the MRCC's 1 point per ₹50 is nothing to write home about. In practice it's the most efficient entry into the Membership Rewards ecosystem: two easy monthly milestones (four spends of ₹1,500, then ₹20,000 total) throw off around 2,000 MR a month, the ₹4,500 fee reverses at just ₹1.5 lakh of annual spend, and routing those points through the ShopWise 5X–10X vouchers lifts the real rate well past face value. It's the card that gets a disciplined spender into MR transfers without a super-premium fee. Undisciplined? It quietly becomes a 1% card.
Your renewal — keep, downgrade or cancel
This card reaches break-even by ERASING its fee, not by out-earning it: the waiver is the decision.
Keep, downgrade or cancel
₹4,500/yr at stake · 5 spend bands
The charge ₹1,000 joining, then ₹4,500/yr
The waiver ₹1,50,000 of spend in the year before renewal — about ₹12,500 a month — and the renewal fee is not charged.
Break-even ₹15,000 a month — ₹1,80,000 a year — is where this card's value crosses its fee, and it gets there by erasing the fee at the waiver rather than out-earning it.
At your spend
₹14,500 a year, net of the fee, at ₹3,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged
₹17,000 a year, net of the fee, at ₹6,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged
₹22,100 a year, net of the fee, at ₹12,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged
₹42,200 a year, net of the fee, at ₹36,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged
₹62,400 a year, net of the fee, at ₹60,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged
Everyday earn plus milestones, minus the fee — the same model as the value panel above, so the two cannot disagree. run your exact spend →

The downgrade
American Express publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.
What has changed under this card
- 30 Sep 2026 Amex India discontinues Reward Multiplier — the whole 5X/3X/2X ladder issuer-wide
- 23 Sep 2026 Axis EDGE brings Accor back, drops ITC, and adds Cathay, Miles & More and Hilton a program these points reach
- 28 Aug 2026 Amex India pauses new card applications across the entire portfolio issuer-wide

What the bank offers to keep you is the one fact this desk cannot compute. We are collecting those reports — dated, and only in aggregate — before publishing any: an offer one reader was made is not one you are owed. Called about this card? Tell us what they offered →
The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.
What's good
- ₹1,000 to get in, against ₹4,500 a year to keep it
- The RENEWAL waives entirely at ₹1.5 lakh of annual spend — and half of it comes back between ₹90,000 and ₹1,49,999
- ~2,000 milestone MR per month if you hit both targets
- 5,000 bonus MR on the first-year renewal, on top of the 4,000-MR welcome
- Eligible for the 18K/24K Gold Collection
- Gateway to MR transfer partners — and, separately, the ShopWise voucher portal
Watch out
- PAUSED for new applications, and as of 28 Aug 2026 the reason Amex gives has CHANGED. The old "American Express is accepting applications for select Cards" line — which implied some other card was still open — is gone, replaced by a blanket banner: "We are temporarily pausing the acceptance of new card applications in India as we make planned updates to our technology platforms for domestic card issuing operations." There are no longer any select Cards. The Platinum Charge and Platinum Reserve, the two products that reopened in September 2025, are now shut alongside this one, so Amex India has no open door at all. Existing cardmembers are unaffected.
- ANNOUNCED 26 Aug 2026, in force 30 Sept 2026: Amex is discontinuing Reward Multiplier — "Effective 30 September' 2026, the Reward Multiplier program … will be discontinued", on the programme's own page. This card's 2X portal band goes with it. At 2X it was the thinnest tier on the board anyway, but note the take below leans on "routing those points through the ShopWise 5X–10X vouchers": ShopWise survives as an independent platform, the Reward-Multiplier-branded route into it does not, and Amex has published no post-sunset multiplier
- The ₹20k monthly 1,000-MR bonus needs one-time enrollment — do it day one
- Base earn is a weak ~1% (1 MR per ₹50)
- No points on fuel, insurance, utilities, cash or POS EMI conversions
- Value needs monthly milestone discipline
- No lounge or travel perks of its own
- 3.5% + GST forex markup — the standard Amex India rate
- Amex acceptance limits everyday utility

Does your spend count toward the fee waiver?
not published — and we say which
₹1,50,000 a year is the bar that waives the ₹4,500 fee. A different question from the one above — earning points and counting toward a threshold are separate rules, and issuers write them separately.
Not published. American Express states what the Amex Membership Rewards Card earns and does not earn, but has not published which spend categories count toward the fee waiver — the ₹1,50,000 bar. We won't guess it from the earn table or from a sibling card: Axis published three cards' rules on one day and all three lists differed. If you hold this card and have it in writing from the issuer, send us the document and we'll source it.

The cutoffs and the actual route in — not the "apply now" button, the door that opens.
Paused — the issuer has stopped taking new applications for now and has not withdrawn the card; existing cardholders are unaffected.
Right now you can't. Amex India stopped taking new applications across its portfolio in March 2025 for a platform migration, and the reopening on 24 September 2025 brought back only the Platinum Charge and the Platinum Reserve — CardInsider's write-up names this card among those that "remain closed for new applications". Seventeen months on, the MRCC's page still shows "Compare Card" where an open card shows Apply Now. Amex has not withdrawn the product, so we file it as paused, not closed: nothing in the terms has moved and existing cardmembers keep the monthly-bonus construct. There is no form and no workaround — and as of 28 August 2026 there is no consolation prize either: the two Platinum products that were the only live doors have been shut too, behind a fresh banner reading "We are temporarily pausing the acceptance of new card applications in India as we make planned updates to our technology platforms for domestic card issuing operations." Amex India is currently closed to new customers, full stop.

- 1 Oct 2026Amex Platinum loses Lufthansa Lounge access with no replacementComplimentary access to participating Lufthansa Lounges for eligible Platinum Card Members, through 30 Sep 2026 → From 1 Oct 2026 Platinum Card Members have no access to any Lufthansa Lounge; no substitute benefit announced
Announced in July 2026, effective 1 October: eligible Platinum Card Members lose access to every Lufthansa Lounge, and Amex has named nothing to put in its place. Access runs through 30 September, so there's a two-month window to use it. For Indian Platinum holders the Lufthansa rooms were the good half of a Frankfurt or Munich connection — Priority Pass and the Global Lounge Collection still cover the airports, but not with a Senator-grade product. It's the third clip to the same card's lounge stack in one quarter, after Mumbai's Centurion closed on 1 July and Centurion guest access halved on 8 July. Amex India's ₹66,000 metal card is being asked to justify itself on Fine Hotels + Resorts and hotel status, not on doors.
- 1 Oct 2026Amex bolts a ₹1 lakh spend gate onto Platinum Travel's domestic lounge access
- 1 Oct 2026Platinum Travel's domestic lounge access gets a ₹1 lakh prior-quarter spend gate8 complimentary domestic lounge visits a year, capped at two per quarter, with no spend condition anywhere. → Up to two complimentary domestic visits in a calendar quarter, EARNED by spending ₹1 lakh or more in eligible transactions in the preceding calendar quarter.
Same notice, three weeks later, and it lands on the other half of what this card is for. "From October 1, 2026, complimentary domestic airport lounge access will be linked to quarterly spending on the card. To receive up to two complimentary domestic airport lounge visits in a calendar quarter, a cardmember will need to have spent INR 1 lakh or more in eligible transactions in the preceding calendar quarter." The visit COUNT does not change — two a quarter, eight a year, exactly as before. What changes is that they stop being something you hold and start being something you earn, and ₹4 lakh a year of spend is now the price of a benefit that used to come with the ₹5,000 fee. On a card sold to travellers rather than to heavy spenders, that is a real withdrawal: the ₹1.9 lakh milestone deleted in September was the rung a moderate spender actually reached, and now the lounges want ₹4 lakh a year too. CARRY THE TRANSITIONAL RUNG, because it applies to exactly one quarter and then vanishes. CardInsider's report of the same notice adds what the first report did not: "As a one-time exception, for the October–December 2026 quarter, cardholders will need to have spent ₹70,000 or more between July and September 2026 to qualify for lounge access." So the gate for the first affected quarter is ₹70,000, not ₹1 lakh — and July and August of that window are already spent by the time most readers learn this, which is what a one-time exception announced seven weeks ahead really means.
