Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

Breaks even only by erasing its fee at ₹4,000 a month

At ₹4,000 a month — ₹48,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹500 gross (earn ₹500) against a fee of ₹0 — the ₹495 is waived, the spend having cleared ₹40,000 a year = ₹500 net — the first rung at or above ₹0. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.

Why #586 The value model credits the 10X/5X buckets at full reach; in practice they bind hard at ₹7,500 of spend a month, so SmartEarn belongs with the entry MR cards, not the mid-premiums its score implies.

The take

SmartEarn is the cheapest door into transferable Membership Rewards in India, and we went back to the programme rulebook to be sure. Amex India's own Membership Rewards Programme T&C lists SmartEarn in the same enrolled-card earn table as the Platinum, the Gold and the Platinum Reserve, and its transfer clause — "Cardmembers may transfer Points in their Program Account to any participating Frequent Customer/Guest Program" — carries no card-level carve-out anywhere in the document. The Lending MITC backs it up by putting SmartEarn on the same FTO (Frequent Traveler Option) rewards tier as the ₹10,000 Platinum Reserve. So the points that land here move to KrisFlyer, BA and Qatar Avios, Asia Miles, Virgin and Emirates at 2:1, and Marriott Bonvoy at 1:1, exactly like everybody else's. The base earn is deliberately awful: 1 MR per ₹50 is 1% at our ₹0.50 house value, and fuel, insurance, utilities, cash and POS EMI earn nothing at all. The card lives or dies on three monthly caps — 500 MR at 10X across Flipkart, Uber, BookMyShow and the other partners, another 500 at 10X that EaseMyTrip and Zomato share, 250 at 5X on Amazon. Max all three and ₹7,500 of spend a month throws off 1,250 MR, about 8.3% back, ~₹7,500 of MR a year on ₹90,000 of spend. Miss them and you are holding a 1% card with 3.5% forex and no lounge. The fee waives at ₹40,000 of annual spend, so finding out which one you are costs nothing.

Your renewal — keep, downgrade or cancel

This card reaches break-even by ERASING its fee, not by out-earning it: the waiver is the decision.

₹495/yr at stake · 5 spend bands

The charge ₹495/yr

The waiver ₹40,000 of spend in the year before renewal — about ₹3,333 a month — and the renewal fee is not charged.

Break-even ₹4,000 a month — ₹48,000 a year — is where this card's value crosses its fee, and it gets there by erasing the fee at the waiver rather than out-earning it.

At your spend

₹4,500 a year, net of the fee, at ₹3,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹7,500 a year, net of the fee, at ₹6,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹13,500 a year, net of the fee, at ₹12,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹37,500 a year, net of the fee, at ₹36,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹61,500 a year, net of the fee, at ₹60,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

The downgrade

American Express publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.

What has changed under this card

  • 30 Sep 2026 Amex India discontinues Reward Multiplier — the whole 5X/3X/2X ladder issuer-wide
  • 23 Sep 2026 Axis EDGE brings Accor back, drops ITC, and adds Cathay, Miles & More and Hilton a program these points reach
  • 28 Aug 2026 Amex India pauses new card applications across the entire portfolio issuer-wide

What the bank offers to keep you is the one fact this desk cannot compute. We are collecting those reports — dated, and only in aggregate — before publishing any: an offer one reader was made is not one you are owed. Called about this card? Tell us what they offered →

The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.

What's good

  • ₹495 — the cheapest door into transferable Membership Rewards; fee waives at ₹40,000 spend
  • Same MR pool as Platinum: KrisFlyer, BA/Qatar Avios, Asia Miles, Virgin, Emirates at 2:1, Marriott 1:1
  • Genuinely transferable — Amex India's Programme T&C names SmartEarn as an enrolled card and puts no card-level limit on partner transfers
  • Points never expire while the card stays open and in good standing (FTO tier)
  • Up to 1,250 MR a month on ₹7,500 of capped 10X/5X spend — roughly 8.3% back
  • ₹500 vouchers at ₹1.2L, ₹1.8L and ₹2.4L of annual spend
  • ₹500 welcome statement credit on ₹10,000 in the first 90 days

Watch out

  • PAUSED for new applications, and as of 28 Aug 2026 the reason Amex gives has CHANGED. The old "American Express is accepting applications for select Cards" line — which implied some other card was still open — is gone, replaced by a blanket banner: "We are temporarily pausing the acceptance of new card applications in India as we make planned updates to our technology platforms for domestic card issuing operations." There are no longer any select Cards. The Platinum Charge and Platinum Reserve, the two products that reopened in September 2025, are now shut alongside this one, so Amex India has no open door at all. Existing cardmembers are unaffected.
  • Base earn is 1 MR per ₹50 — a 1% card the moment the caps run out
  • 10X/5X are hard-capped at 500 + 500 + 250 MR a month; ₹7,500 of spend is the entire game
  • Zomato shares its 500-MR 10X cap with EaseMyTrip — food delivery and flight bookings fight over one bucket
  • No points on fuel, insurance, utilities, cash or POS EMI conversions
  • No lounge access at all, domestic or international
  • 3.5% + GST forex markup — the standard Amex India rate
  • Amex acceptance still limits everyday utility
  • Only one complimentary supplementary card, against two to four on every other Amex India card

Does your spend count toward the fee waiver?

not published — and we say which

₹40,000 a year is the bar that waives the ₹495 fee. A different question from the one above — earning points and counting toward a threshold are separate rules, and issuers write them separately.

Not published. American Express states what the Amex SmartEarn earns, but has not published which spend categories count toward the fee waiver and the milestones — the ₹40,000 bar. We won't guess it from the earn table or from a sibling card: Axis published three cards' rules on one day and all three lists differed. If you hold this card and have it in writing from the issuer, send us the document and we'll source it.

Paused — the issuer has stopped taking new applications for now and has not withdrawn the card; existing cardholders are unaffected.

Right now you can't. This was Amex India's cheapest way in — ₹495 and a 10X cap to farm — and it is one of the cards the March 2025 application freeze took out. The 24 September 2025 reopening covered only the Platinum Charge and the Platinum Reserve; CardInsider's report names SmartEarn among the cards that "remain closed for new applications", and the product page still offers "Compare Card" instead of Apply Now. Amex hasn't withdrawn it, so this is a pause rather than a closure — but there is no entry-level door into the Membership Rewards ecosystem today. As of 28 August 2026 there is no door at any price: the ₹66,000 Platinum Charge and the ₹10,000 Platinum Reserve, the two cards that were still live, went behind a banner reading "We are temporarily pausing the acceptance of new card applications in India as we make planned updates to our technology platforms for domestic card issuing operations."

Amex Platinum loses Lufthansa Lounge access with no replacement
Complimentary access to participating Lufthansa Lounges for eligible Platinum Card Members, through 30 Sep 2026 → From 1 Oct 2026 Platinum Card Members have no access to any Lufthansa Lounge; no substitute benefit announced

Announced in July 2026, effective 1 October: eligible Platinum Card Members lose access to every Lufthansa Lounge, and Amex has named nothing to put in its place. Access runs through 30 September, so there's a two-month window to use it. For Indian Platinum holders the Lufthansa rooms were the good half of a Frankfurt or Munich connection — Priority Pass and the Global Lounge Collection still cover the airports, but not with a Senator-grade product. It's the third clip to the same card's lounge stack in one quarter, after Mumbai's Centurion closed on 1 July and Centurion guest access halved on 8 July. Amex India's ₹66,000 metal card is being asked to justify itself on Fine Hotels + Resorts and hotel status, not on doors.

Amex bolts a ₹1 lakh spend gate onto Platinum Travel's domestic lounge access
  • 1 Oct 2026
not yet in force Lounge major American Express
Platinum Travel's domestic lounge access gets a ₹1 lakh prior-quarter spend gate
8 complimentary domestic lounge visits a year, capped at two per quarter, with no spend condition anywhere. → Up to two complimentary domestic visits in a calendar quarter, EARNED by spending ₹1 lakh or more in eligible transactions in the preceding calendar quarter.

Same notice, three weeks later, and it lands on the other half of what this card is for. "From October 1, 2026, complimentary domestic airport lounge access will be linked to quarterly spending on the card. To receive up to two complimentary domestic airport lounge visits in a calendar quarter, a cardmember will need to have spent INR 1 lakh or more in eligible transactions in the preceding calendar quarter." The visit COUNT does not change — two a quarter, eight a year, exactly as before. What changes is that they stop being something you hold and start being something you earn, and ₹4 lakh a year of spend is now the price of a benefit that used to come with the ₹5,000 fee. On a card sold to travellers rather than to heavy spenders, that is a real withdrawal: the ₹1.9 lakh milestone deleted in September was the rung a moderate spender actually reached, and now the lounges want ₹4 lakh a year too. CARRY THE TRANSITIONAL RUNG, because it applies to exactly one quarter and then vanishes. CardInsider's report of the same notice adds what the first report did not: "As a one-time exception, for the October–December 2026 quarter, cardholders will need to have spent ₹70,000 or more between July and September 2026 to qualify for lounge access." So the gate for the first affected quarter is ₹70,000, not ₹1 lakh — and July and August of that window are already spent by the time most readers learn this, which is what a one-time exception announced seven weeks ahead really means.
