₹2,800
at ₹0.25L/month
₹8,500
at ₹0.4L/month
₹15,300
at ₹1L/month

Read the ₹0.4L figure carefully: ₹4,000 of its ₹8,500 gross is a voucher or a hotel night, not points — worth that only if you would have bought it anyway.

Welcome: 1,000 CashPoints (₹1,000 as statement credit) on payment of the joining fee — and nothing at all on renewal

Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied: it earns nothing on fuel here, so that spend is dropped, not paid at the headline, and stops pacing milestones and the waiver. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

Breaks even only by erasing its fee at ₹9,000 a month

At ₹9,000 a month — ₹1,08,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹1,000 gross (earn ₹1,000) against a fee of ₹0 — the ₹1,000 is waived, the spend having cleared ₹1,00,000 a year = ₹1,000 net — the first rung at or above ₹0. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.

2 notes on the card itself: how it is issued · why it ranks #197

HDFC Bank · Not published · entry

Why #197 HDFC's biggest card by a distance — twenty lakh holders by the bank's own count — and it lands at the tail of a travel board for the reason its own T&C states: the complimentary lounge quota was switched off on 30 November 2023, and what replaced it is a voucher you can only take INSTEAD of the ₹1,000 gift voucher. A card that makes you choose between a lounge and a lakh's worth of milestone is not a travel card, however good it is at Swiggy.

Millennia's CashPoints are worth ₹1 each — but only against the statement, only above a 500-point minimum, only 3,000 points a calendar month, and only after a ₹50 redemption fee HDFC added on 1 August 2024. Point them at travel and they collapse to ₹0.30: that is the rate on SmartBuy flights and hotels, on the rewards catalogue, and on Airmiles, and the catalogue route adds ₹99 + taxes of handling on top. Flight and hotel bookings can absorb at most 50% of the fare in points, capped at 50,000 points a month. There is no transfer partner — this currency does not reach an airline programme at all.

The take

Millennia is a genuinely good cashback card and a genuinely poor travel card, and the reader who searched for it deserves both halves of that sentence. The good half: 5% back on Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Tata CLiQ, Swiggy, Zomato, Uber, BookMyShow, Sony LIV and Cult.fit, 1% on everything else, and — unusually for an Indian rewards card — a point that is worth an actual rupee against your statement rather than ₹0.25 in a catalogue. Spend ₹20,000 a month across those ten merchants and you bank the full ₹1,000 monthly cap; the ₹1,000 fee waives at ₹1 lakh of annual spend, which almost every holder clears. The travel half is where it stops. HDFC discontinued Millennia's complimentary lounge access at midnight on 30 November 2023 — its own T&C says so, twice — and folded lounge access into the quarterly milestone instead. Put ₹1 lakh through the card in a calendar quarter and you may claim ONE voucher: either an HOI airport-lounge voucher, or ₹1,000 of Amazon Pay, Flipkart, PVR, BookMyShow, Uber or Pizza Hut. Never both. So the best case is four lounge visits a year, bought at ₹4,000 of forgone vouchers and ₹4 lakh of spend, and the reader who takes the gift cards gets zero lounge. Everything else points the same way: forex is a full 3.5%, the points reach no airline programme, and pushed at SmartBuy flights they are worth ₹0.30 rather than ₹1. Keep it — as the card that pays your Swiggy bill. Do not keep it as the card that gets you into a lounge.

Your renewal — keep, downgrade or cancel

This card reaches break-even by ERASING its fee, not by out-earning it: the waiver is the decision.

₹1,00,000 annual spend erases that fee
₹9,000/mo is where the waiver, not the earn, saves it

₹1,000/yr at stake · 5 spend bands

The charge ₹1,000/yr

The waiver ₹1,00,000 of spend in the year before renewal — about ₹8,333 a month — and the renewal fee is not charged.

Break-even ₹9,000 a month — ₹1,08,000 a year — is where this card's value crosses its fee, and it gets there by erasing the fee at the waiver rather than out-earning it.

₹9,600 a year, net of the fee, at ₹6,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹15,300 a year, net of the fee, at ₹12,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

The downgrade

HDFC Bank publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.

What has changed under this card

  • 1 Sep 2026 SmartBuy moves Amazon Pay gift cards to 1X under Insta Deals issuer-wide
  • 1 Jul 2026 HDFC caps SmartBuy brand-voucher rewards issuer-wide
  • 15 May 2026 HDFC lifts its DCC markup to 1.75% across the card range issuer-wide

What the bank offers to keep you is the one fact this desk cannot compute. We are collecting those reports — dated, and only in aggregate — before publishing any: an offer one reader was made is not one you are owed. Called about this card? Tell us what they offered →

The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.

What's good

  • 5% back as CashPoints across ten online merchants, capped at ₹1,000 a month
  • 1 CashPoint = ₹1 against the statement — a rupee a point, not a catalogue token
  • ₹1,000 fee waived on ₹1 lakh of spend in the year before renewal
  • 1,000 CashPoints (₹1,000) welcome benefit on payment of the joining fee
  • ₹1,000 every quarter at ₹1 lakh of quarterly spend — as a brand voucher OR one lounge visit
  • 1% fuel-surcharge waiver on ₹400–₹5,000 fills, up to ₹250 a statement cycle

Watch out

  • The lounge is an EITHER/OR: one HOI lounge voucher or a ₹1,000 brand voucher per quarter, never both — 4 visits a year at absolute best
  • Complimentary lounge access was withdrawn on 30 Nov 2023; walk-in visits on the card are now charged at the lounge's own rate
  • Points are ₹1 only as statement credit — ₹0.30 on SmartBuy flights, hotels, catalogue and Airmiles
  • Statement-credit redemption is capped at 3,000 CashPoints a calendar month and costs ₹50 a request since 1 Aug 2024
  • Both earn buckets cap at 1,000 CashPoints a calendar month — the 5% saturates at ₹20,000 of merchant spend
  • No transfer partners at all: these CashPoints are not the HDFC Reward Points that reach KrisFlyer and Avios
  • Forex 3.5% + GST (HDFC personal MITC v4.5, Aug 2026), and the DCC markup went to 1.75% on 15 May 2026
  • Wallet loads, EMI, rent, government and third-party education payments earn nothing
  • Unredeemed CashPoints lapse after 2 years, and the whole balance is nullified if the card sits unused 365 days

What these points actually fly

No live transfer route takes HDFC Bank CashPoints into a programme that publishes an award chart. These points buy catalogue and portal redemptions, not award seats — so this page has no flight to show you, and will not invent one.

9 sourced rules · 5 pay zero

The card's own T&C, published 20-Jul-2026, states the exclusions twice — once in the CashBack table's footnote and once in each of the 5% and 1% clause sets. Both buckets are separately capped at 1,000 CashPoints a calendar month, so the ceiling applies to every category below whatever its treatment says.

Fuel excluded — "CashPoints shall not be eligible for … Fuel Spends" — a 1% fuel-surcharge waiver applies instead on ₹400–₹5,000 transactions, capped ₹250 a statement cycle
Rent & property management excluded — "With effect from 1st January 2023, Rent payments and Government related transactions will NOT earn Reward Points"; a 1% fee also applies to rent paid through third-party apps from 1-Aug-2024, capped ₹3,000 a transaction (MCC 6513)
Government / tax excluded — Named beside rent in the same 1-Jan-2023 clause, and again in the CashBack table's "except Fuel, EMI, Wallet, Rent payments, Govt related txns" footnote
Utilities (electricity/water/gas) full — Earns the 1% bucket — Millennia's own T&C carries none of the 2,000-point utility caps its Freedom sibling does; a 1% fee applies only to a single utility transaction above ₹50,000, capped ₹3,000
Insurance full — Earns the 1% bucket, and the T&C states plainly that "Insurance transactions will not be considered as Utility transactions and hence no charge will be applicable" — no 1% fee, and no cap of its own
Education full — Full CashPoints when paid direct to the college/school website or POS machine; ZERO through third-party apps since 1-Sep-2024. Education MCCs: 8211, 8220, 8241, 8244, 8249, 8299
Wallet loads excluded — "Effective 1st September 2024, Wallet loading and EMI transactions will NOT earn Reward Points. Wallet MCC: 6540" — gift, prepaid-card and voucher purchases earn the 1% bucket but never the 5%
Groceries & supermarkets not applicable
Dining & food delivery accelerated — 5% back as CashPoints on Swiggy and Zomato, inside one ceiling of 1,000 CashPoints a calendar month SHARED with the other eight brands in the 5% list — about ₹20,000 of accelerated spend a month, and HDFC publishes no split of it. Non-EMI only; a restaurant bill outside those apps earns the 1% base
Telecom not applicable
Jewellery / gold not applicable
Forex / international spends not applicable
UPI (RuPay-on-UPI only) not applicable
EMI conversions / merchant EMI excluded — "All EMI transactions (even if preclosed) including Smart EMI / Dial an EMI transaction" are named in the 1% clause's exclusion list
  • Fuel · excluded "CashPoints shall not be eligible for … Fuel Spends" — a 1% fuel-surcharge waiver applies instead on ₹400–₹5,000 transactions, capped ₹250 a statement cycle
  • Rent & property management · excluded "With effect from 1st January 2023, Rent payments and Government related transactions will NOT earn Reward Points"; a 1% fee also applies to rent paid through third-party apps from 1-Aug-2024, capped ₹3,000 a transaction (MCC 6513)
  • Wallet loads · excluded "Effective 1st September 2024, Wallet loading and EMI transactions will NOT earn Reward Points. Wallet MCC: 6540" — gift, prepaid-card and voucher purchases earn the 1% bucket but never the 5%
  • Government / tax · excluded Named beside rent in the same 1-Jan-2023 clause, and again in the CashBack table's "except Fuel, EMI, Wallet, Rent payments, Govt related txns" footnote

Does your spend count toward the fee waiver?

not published — and we say which

₹1,00,000 a year is the bar that waives the ₹1,000 fee. A different question from the one above — earning points and counting toward a threshold are separate rules, and issuers write them separately.

Not published. HDFC Bank states what the HDFC Bank Millennia earns and does not earn, but has not published which spend categories count toward the fee waiver — the ₹1,00,000 bar. We won't guess it from the earn table or from a sibling card: Axis published three cards' rules on one day and all three lists differed. If you hold this card and have it in writing from the issuer, send us the document and we'll source it.

Salaried applicants need net monthly income above ₹35,000; self-employed need ITR above ₹6 lakh a year. Application is the standard three-step online flow with video KYC where documents are required. HDFC's own page claims twenty lakh-plus cardholders, which is the best available signal on how hard this approval actually is.

  • 1 Sept 2026
    Devaluation moderate HDFC Bank
SmartBuy moves Amazon Pay gift cards to 1X under Insta Deals
Amazon Pay Gift Voucher sat in SmartBuy's accelerated tier — 'up to 5X Reward Points or 5% cashback' → 'Insta Deals: 1 % Instant Discount + 1X Reward Points' — this brand is out of the accelerated tier

The most-farmed HDFC voucher route stopped being a points play. SmartBuy's own voucher storefront now shows the Amazon Pay Gift Voucher under a new "Insta Deals" tile reading "1 % Instant Discount + 1X Reward Points", and the page's own description flipped from "up to 5X Reward Points or 5% cashback" to "up to 1X". The comparison that settles it sits on the same storefront: the Amazon Fresh voucher still carries an "Accelerated Rewards — Upto 5X Reward Points RPs / 5% Cashback" block that the Amazon Pay page no longer has, so this is one brand leaving the accelerated tier, not the tier closing. The date, honestly: the Insta Deals offer ("Flat 1% OFF", ₹10,000 monthly limit) was already live in the page's own data on 31 August 2026, the reward line still read 5X in the 1 September 16:26 UTC archive capture, and read 1X when this desk fetched the page on 2 September — so 1 September is the community's effective date sitting inside a window we can bracket from primary captures, not a figure HDFC published. The bank has announced nothing and no SmartBuy page carries a notice. Two pieces of context for the size of it: brand vouchers were already sub-capped at 3,000 accelerated points a month from 1 July 2026, and Amazon Pay vouchers disappeared from the portal entirely for stretches of July and August before returning in this shape. Flipkart and Amazon Fresh vouchers still pay the accelerated rate; the ₹10,000-a-month Amazon Pay lane now pays base earn plus the 1% instant discount.
