Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied: it earns nothing on fuel here, so that spend is dropped, not paid at the headline, and stops pacing milestones and the waiver. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

Pays for itself at ₹17,000 a month

At ₹17,000 a month — ₹2,04,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹2,400 gross (earn ₹1,900 + milestones ₹500) against its ₹2,400 fee = ₹0 net — the first rung at or above ₹0. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.

Why #144 The only card on India's public-sector shelf that names Priority Pass on the issuer's own page — 8 domestic and 2 international visits for ₹2,400. Ranked on the lounge, not on a 1% closed-loop point.

₹2,400 + GST
Annual fee1
₹3,00,000 spend
Fee waiver

₹0.25 a point, flat, redeemed as a credit-card bill payment or a gift voucher through the Union Rewardz app. Union Bank names no airline or hotel partner on any card it issues, so 1% is the whole story — there is no transfer upside waiting behind it.

The take

UNICORN is the card that made this whole Union Bank shelf worth carrying. Public-sector product pages usually say "complimentary lounge access" and stop; this one names the operator — "8 Domestic and 2 International Lounge Access per annum via Priority Pass" — which means a reader can check the room list before they apply instead of finding out at the desk. At ₹2,400, waived outright at ₹3L of annual spend, that is a better lounge price than ICICI Rubyx or RBL Aspire, and the two international visits are the part the cheap end of the market almost never gives you. The rest is a competent ₹2,400 bundle rather than a great one. Four reward points per ₹100 at a flat ₹0.25 is 1% — respectable for the fee, but those points redeem into your own statement and nowhere else, because Union Bank publishes no transfer partner on any card. The travel accelerator is a 10% MakeMyTrip flight discount capped at ₹1,500 a year, which is a coupon, not an accelerator. Forex is 3% — better than the 3.5% norm, not enough better to make this your card abroad. And the earn is hard-capped at 10,000 points a month, so anyone spending past ₹2.5L a month stops earning entirely. Buy it for the lounge and the ₹3L waiver, and take the 1% as the price of admission. Keep.

The downgrade

Union Bank of India publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.

If you call to cancel

What the bank offers to keep you is the one fact this desk cannot compute. We are collecting those reports — dated, and only in aggregate — before publishing any: an offer one reader was made is not one you are owed. Called about this card? Tell us what they offered →

The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.

What's good

  • 8 domestic + 2 international lounge visits a year, via Priority Pass, named on the issuer's own page
  • Fee waived entirely at ₹3L of previous-year spend; joining fee waived at ₹1L in 90 days
  • 4,000-point welcome (₹1,000) on just ₹10,000 of spend in 30 days
  • ₹500 of milestone points at each of ₹1L, ₹2L, ₹3L, ₹4L and ₹5L — ₹2,500 a year
  • 12 months of Prime/Hotstar/SonyLIV/Zee5, 3 months Swiggy One, quarterly Nykaa/Myntra/BigBasket vouchers

Watch out

  • Earn stops dead at 10,000 points a month — ₹2.5L of spend, then nothing
  • Union Rewardz has NO airline or hotel partner; 1% is the ceiling, not the floor
  • The '5X in your birthday month' and '5X above ₹20k a month' offers carry no published cap or mechanics — we do not value what the bank will not define
  • MakeMyTrip is a 10% flight discount capped at ₹1,500 a YEAR, not an earn accelerator
  • Existing-to-bank customers only, ₹5L gross annual income, and the base limit is just ₹50,000

What these points actually fly

No live transfer route takes Union Rewardz Points into a programme that publishes an award chart. These points buy catalogue and portal redemptions, not award seats — so this page has no flight to show you, and will not invent one.

Does your spend count toward the fee waiver?

not published — and we say which

₹3,00,000 a year is the bar that waives the ₹2,400 fee. A different question from the one above — earning points and counting toward a threshold are separate rules, and issuers write them separately.

Not published. Union Bank of India states what the Union Bank UNICORN earns and does not earn, but has not published which spend categories count toward the fee waiver and the milestones — the ₹3,00,000 bar. We won't guess it from the earn table or from a sibling card: Axis published three cards' rules on one day and all three lists differed. If you hold this card and have it in writing from the issuer, send us the document and we'll source it.

One MITC covers the whole Union Bank shelf (version 1.4, effective 25 Sep 2025). UNICORN is ₹2,400 in both the joining and the annual column; joining waived at ₹1L of spend within 90 days of activation, annual waived at ₹3L in the previous financial year. Card replacement ₹249. Reward earn is capped at 10,000 points a month per Customer ID excluding milestones, and total milestone points at 10,000 a year — which the five ₹1L-to-₹5L rungs of 2,000 points reach exactly. Jewellery, fuel, cash withdrawal, crypto, wallet loads, alcohol and insurance earn nothing. Base credit limit is ₹50,000. CIBIL 700+ unless issued against a deposit lien.
