What it's worth to you, after the fee
Welcome: ₹500 gift voucher for one transaction of any amount inside 37 days of issuance — on a FEE-PAYING card. The only lifetime-free card HDFC ever wrote the voucher into was one issued between 1 Oct and 31 Dec 2025, a three-month window now shut; a card issued up to 30 Sep 2025 lifetime-free, first-year-free, or with its fee reversed was excluded outright
Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied: it earns nothing on fuel here, so that spend is dropped, not paid at the headline, and stops pacing milestones and the waiver. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

Pays for itself at ₹5,000 a month
At ₹5,000 a month — ₹60,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹600 gross (earn ₹600) against its ₹500 fee = ₹100 net — the first rung at or above ₹0. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.
2 notes on the card itself: how it is issued · why it ranks #153
Why #153 Placed above the IRCTC BOBCARD and below the IRCTC SBI Premier, which is exactly where the rail shelf's own arithmetic puts it: HDFC pays 10% on a ticket booked through SmartBuy against BOBCARD's lean-season-only 10% on a ₹250-a-cycle leash, and it doubles BOBCARD's railway-lounge quota. What keeps it below SBI's Premier is that every lounge on it is a railway lounge — there is no airport door on this card at all.
These points are worth ₹1 and buy exactly one thing: a train ticket, booked through HDFC SmartBuy, using the Points + Pay slider. No catalogue, no statement credit, no airline or hotel partner — and HDFC states in terms that they "cannot be combined with the points accrued on any other HDFC Bank card account", so this is not the currency that reaches KrisFlyer and Avios. Points cover at most 70% of the fare, all passengers and IRCTC's own service charges included, the minimum burn is 100 points, and every successful redemption costs ₹99 + GST — which is a tenth of a 1,000-point burn and the whole of a small one.
The take
Of the three IRCTC co-brands on this board, HDFC's is the one that pays best on the thing it is for. Book a train ticket through HDFC SmartBuy and you take 5 Reward Points per ₹100 — worth a rupee each against your next fare — plus a separate 5% cashback on the same booking: 10% back, with the points side capped at 1,000 a month and the cashback at ₹1,000 a month, so about ₹2,000 a month or ₹24,000 a year at absolute full stretch. Book on irctc.co.in or Rail Connect instead and you get the 5 points but not the cashback, which is a distinction the marketing copy does not make and your wallet will. On top sits the 1% IRCTC transaction-charge reversal, ₹500 of gift voucher every calendar quarter at ₹30,000 of spend, ₹500 more for activating the card, and eight complimentary IRCTC Executive Lounge visits a year — two a quarter, ₹2 to validate, valid train ticket required, and worth having at a four-hour connection in Jaipur or Agra Cantt. The ₹500 fee waives at ₹1.5 lakh of annual spend. Now the catch, and it is the whole catch: these points redeem against train tickets and nothing else. There is no catalogue, no statement credit, no airline transfer, and HDFC will not let you pool them with any other HDFC card. Every redemption costs ₹99 + GST and can cover at most 70% of the fare. Everything off the rails earns 1% and caps at 1,000 points a month. So: if you ride Indian Railways every month, this is a good ₹500 card and the best of the IRCTC three at the ticket counter. If you ride twice a year, the points are a coupon you will forget to use before they expire.

Here is the fee, the spend that clears it, and everything that has moved under this card since you last decided.
Keep, downgrade or cancel
₹500/yr at stake · 5 spend bands
The charge ₹500/yr
The waiver ₹1,50,000 of spend in the year before renewal — about ₹12,500 a month — and the renewal fee is not charged.
Break-even ₹5,000 a month — ₹60,000 a year — is where this card's value crosses its fee.
At your spend

The downgrade
HDFC Bank / IRCTC publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.

What the bank offers to keep you is the one fact this desk cannot compute. We are collecting those reports — dated, and only in aggregate — before publishing any: an offer one reader was made is not one you are owed. Called about this card? Tell us what they offered →
The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.
What's good
- 10% on train tickets booked via HDFC SmartBuy — 5 points per ₹100 at ₹1 each, plus 5% cashback
- 8 complimentary IRCTC Executive Lounge visits a year (2 a quarter), supplementary cardholders included
- ₹500 gift voucher every calendar quarter on ₹30,000 of spend — ₹2,000 a year
- 1% IRCTC transaction-charge reversal on every rail booking, up to ₹1,000 a month
- ₹500 renewal fee waived on ₹1,50,000 of spend in the year before the renewal date
- ₹500 welcome voucher for one transaction of any size within 37 days — on a fee-paying card
Watch out
- Points redeem ONLY against train tickets on HDFC SmartBuy — no catalogue, no cashback, no transfer partner
- Every redemption costs ₹99 + GST, and points can cover at most 70% of the fare
- The 5% cashback is SmartBuy-only — book on irctc.co.in or Rail Connect and you get the points but not the cashback
- Rail earn caps at 1,000 points and ₹1,000 of cashback a month, and at 12,000 of each a year
- Everything that is not a train ticket earns 1%, capped at 1,000 points a month; UPI caps at 500
- The joining fee of ₹500 + taxes is levied on the 45th day after issuance, not on day one
- The ₹500 welcome voucher is a PAID-CARD benefit: HDFC's T&C withholds it from any lifetime-free or first-year-free card issued up to 30 Sep 2025, and from any card whose fee is reversed. The one carve-in — LTF cards issued 1 Oct–31 Dec 2025 — was a three-month window that has closed
- Every lounge here is a RAILWAY lounge — the card opens no airport door anywhere
- Forex 3.5% + GST (HDFC personal MITC v4.5, Aug 2026) — do not take this abroad
- Points expire 2 years after your last earn or burn, and fuel, wallet, rent, government, education and gaming spends earn nothing at all
What these points actually fly
No live transfer route takes IRCTC HDFC Bank Reward Points into a programme that publishes an award chart. These points buy catalogue and portal redemptions, not award seats — so this page has no flight to show you, and will not invent one.
what the cards that DO reach a chart can fly — 2,196 corridors priced →
What earns, what doesn't
8 sourced rules · 6 pay zero
The exclusion list on this card is longer than HDFC's usual one — education is barred outright rather than merely routed away from third-party apps. Note also that the BASE bucket carries its own ceiling: 1,000 Reward Points a month and 12,000 a year on other spends, matching the cap on the 5X IRCTC accelerator.
- Fuel · excluded Named first in "Reward Points will NOT accrue for the following spend on the card"; a 1% fuel-surcharge waiver applies instead
- Rent & property management · excluded "Government and Rental pay transactions (Property management services like rent, maintenance, packers & movers, etc)"
- Wallet loads · excluded "Wallet loads / Gift or Prepaid Card load/ Voucher purchase" — MCC 6540 earns nothing "even if it is from these merchants"
- Government / tax · excluded Named beside rent in the same exclusion bullet

Does your spend count toward the fee waiver?
not published — and we say which
₹1,50,000 a year is the bar that waives the ₹500 fee. A different question from the one above — earning points and counting toward a threshold are separate rules, and issuers write them separately.
Not published. HDFC Bank / IRCTC states what the IRCTC HDFC Bank Credit Card earns and does not earn, but has not published which spend categories count toward the fee waiver — the ₹1,50,000 bar. We won't guess it from the earn table or from a sibling card: Axis published three cards' rules on one day and all three lists differed. If you hold this card and have it in writing from the issuer, send us the document and we'll source it.

The cutoffs and the actual route in — not the "apply now" button, the door that opens.
Direct application — no invite list, no banking relationship required.
Open, and applications run through HDFC or through IRCTC's own site; HDFC also takes them at a branch. Salaried applicants need to be 21–60 with net monthly income of ₹25,000; self-employed 21–65 with annual ITR above ₹6 lakh. One step is easy to miss and it gates the whole product: the 11-digit loyalty number on the back of the plastic must be linked to your IRCTC login — same email, mobile and date of birth as the application — after the joining fee is paid, or the accelerated rail earn does not attach.

The fine print
7 of 7 MITC rows published
What the MITC actually says — the rates, fees and cutoffs the brochure skips.
Fee ₹500 + taxes, levied on the 45th day after issuance rather than on day one; renewal waived at ₹1.5L annual spend. Cash advance limit is 40% of the credit line. The MITC exempts this card from HDFC's 1% railway-ticket purchase fee and reverses it as a benefit, capped ₹1,000/month.

- 1 Sept 2026SmartBuy moves Amazon Pay gift cards to 1X under Insta DealsAmazon Pay Gift Voucher sat in SmartBuy's accelerated tier — 'up to 5X Reward Points or 5% cashback' → 'Insta Deals: 1 % Instant Discount + 1X Reward Points' — this brand is out of the accelerated tier
The most-farmed HDFC voucher route stopped being a points play. SmartBuy's own voucher storefront now shows the Amazon Pay Gift Voucher under a new "Insta Deals" tile reading "1 % Instant Discount + 1X Reward Points", and the page's own description flipped from "up to 5X Reward Points or 5% cashback" to "up to 1X". The comparison that settles it sits on the same storefront: the Amazon Fresh voucher still carries an "Accelerated Rewards — Upto 5X Reward Points RPs / 5% Cashback" block that the Amazon Pay page no longer has, so this is one brand leaving the accelerated tier, not the tier closing. The date, honestly: the Insta Deals offer ("Flat 1% OFF", ₹10,000 monthly limit) was already live in the page's own data on 31 August 2026, the reward line still read 5X in the 1 September 16:26 UTC archive capture, and read 1X when this desk fetched the page on 2 September — so 1 September is the community's effective date sitting inside a window we can bracket from primary captures, not a figure HDFC published. The bank has announced nothing and no SmartBuy page carries a notice. Two pieces of context for the size of it: brand vouchers were already sub-capped at 3,000 accelerated points a month from 1 July 2026, and Amazon Pay vouchers disappeared from the portal entirely for stretches of July and August before returning in this shape. Flipkart and Amazon Fresh vouchers still pay the accelerated rate; the ₹10,000-a-month Amazon Pay lane now pays base earn plus the 1% instant discount.
