Welcome: 500 Reward Points (₹75 at Freedom's own ₹0.15) on fee realisation — and only if the joining fee was actually charged

Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied: it earns nothing on fuel here, so that spend is dropped, not paid at the headline, and stops pacing milestones and the waiver. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

Spend tiers, milestones and fee waivers included, at our house ₹/point. Portal and category multipliers can push higher — run your exact number →

Breaks even only by erasing its fee at ₹5,000 a month

At ₹5,000 a month — ₹60,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹0 gross (earn ₹0) against a fee of ₹0 — the ₹500 is waived, the spend having cleared ₹50,000 a year = ₹0 net — the first rung at or above ₹0. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.

2 notes on the card itself: how it is issued · why it ranks #199

HDFC Bank · Not published · entry

Why #199 Last on the board, and it earns the spot: 0.075% on ordinary spend is the lowest effective rate we carry. It is here at all because decision 0012 asks whether a card delivers a travel benefit, and Freedom's 10X list includes OYO — a hotel-booking platform — which is a travel accelerator by the letter of gate 4. Ten lakh people hold this card, and a comparison only works if both sides are on the board.

₹500 + GST
Annual fee1
₹50,000 spend

Freedom's CashPoints are worth ₹0.15 and there is no avenue where they are worth more: ₹0.15 as cashback, ₹0.15 on Unified SmartBuy flights and hotels, up to ₹0.15 in the product catalogue, and 0.15 airmiles. That last one is why this card does NOT pass decision 0012's transfer gate — a route only counts if it beats the value of not transferring, and 0.15 airmiles at the ₹1-a-mile anchor is ₹0.15, exactly what the cashback pays. It is a sideways move, not a way out. Our earn rate already bakes the ₹0.15 in.

The take

Freedom is on this board for one reason and the reader deserves it stated plainly: OYO is on its 10X list, OYO books hotels, and a hotel accelerator is a travel benefit by the letter of our own scope rule. That is the entire travel case. Everything else about the card is a lesson in why a headline multiplier means nothing without the point value behind it. Ten times what? Ten CashPoints per ₹200 at BigBasket, BookMyShow, OYO, Swiggy and Uber — and a Freedom CashPoint is worth ₹0.15, on every single avenue HDFC offers. So 10X works out to 0.75% back, capped at 2,500 points a month, and everything else on the card pays 1 point per ₹200: 0.075%. Spend ₹50,000 a month away from those five merchants and you have earned ₹37. The airmiles line on the redemption grid is worse than useless: 0.15 airmiles per point is precisely what the cashback pays, so converting to miles gains you nothing and costs you liquidity. Forex is 3.5%. There is no lounge — and here a warning, because HDFC's own site will mislead you: a stale duplicate Freedom page still advertises "complimentary access to airport lounges worldwide", a claim that appears nowhere on the live product page or in the T&C dated 15 May 2026. It is not a benefit; do not go to an airport expecting it. If Freedom is your first card, it is doing a real job — it approves at ₹12,000 of monthly income and the ₹500 fee waives at ₹50,000 of annual spend. The moment you can hold something else, hold something else: HDFC's own Millennia pays 1% at a rupee a point, more than thirteen times this card's everyday rate, for ₹500 more a year.

Your renewal — keep, downgrade or cancel

This card reaches break-even by ERASING its fee, not by out-earning it: the waiver is the decision.

₹50,000 annual spend erases that fee
₹5,000/mo is where the waiver, not the earn, saves it

₹500/yr at stake · 5 spend bands

The charge ₹500/yr

The waiver ₹50,000 of spend in the year before renewal — about ₹4,167 a month — and the renewal fee is not charged.

Break-even ₹5,000 a month — ₹60,000 a year — is where this card's value crosses its fee, and it gets there by erasing the fee at the waiver rather than out-earning it.

At your spend

₹200 a year, net of the fee, at ₹3,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹400 a year, net of the fee, at ₹6,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹800 a year, net of the fee, at ₹12,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹2,500 a year, net of the fee, at ₹36,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹4,200 a year, net of the fee, at ₹60,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

Everyday earn plus milestones, minus the fee — the same model as the value panel above, so the two cannot disagree. run your exact spend →

The downgrade

HDFC Bank publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.

What has changed under this card

  • 1 Sep 2026 SmartBuy moves Amazon Pay gift cards to 1X under Insta Deals issuer-wide
  • 1 Jul 2026 HDFC caps SmartBuy brand-voucher rewards issuer-wide
  • 15 May 2026 HDFC lifts its DCC markup to 1.75% across the card range issuer-wide

We price what is in force today — a change that has not happened yet is not in these numbers. the full archive for this card →

If you call to cancel

What the bank offers to keep you is the one fact this desk cannot compute. We are collecting those reports — dated, and only in aggregate — before publishing any: an offer one reader was made is not one you are owed. Called about this card? Tell us what they offered →

The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.

What's good

  • 10X CashPoints (0.75%) on BigBasket, BookMyShow, OYO, Swiggy and Uber, up to 2,500 points a month
  • ₹500 renewal fee waived on just ₹50,000 of annual spend
  • Approves at ₹12,000 of net monthly income — one of the lowest thresholds HDFC publishes
  • 500 Reward Points welcome, if the joining fee is actually charged
  • 1% fuel-surcharge waiver on ₹400–₹5,000 fills, up to ₹250 a statement cycle

Watch out

  • A CashPoint is worth ₹0.15 here — on cashback, on SmartBuy flights and hotels, in the catalogue and as airmiles
  • Everything outside the five 10X merchants earns 1 point per ₹200: an effective 0.075%
  • 0.15 airmiles a point is exactly what the cashback pays — transferring gains nothing and this card reaches no airline programme
  • NO lounge access. A stale duplicate HDFC page still claims "airport lounges worldwide"; the live product page and the 15-May-2026 T&C say nothing of the kind
  • The 10X bucket caps at 2,500 CashPoints a calendar month, and the whole card at 15,000 Reward Points a statement cycle
  • Utilities and telecom cap at 2,000 Reward Points a month each since 1 Sep 2024
  • Forex 3.5% + GST (HDFC personal MITC v4.5, Aug 2026) — one of the worst reasons to take this abroad
  • Fuel, EMI, rent, government spends and wallet loads earn nothing at all
  • The 5X-on-EMI feature was removed on 1 Sep 2024, and unredeemed points lapse after 2 years

What these points actually fly

No live transfer route takes HDFC Bank CashPoints into a programme that publishes an award chart. These points buy catalogue and portal redemptions, not award seats — so this page has no flight to show you, and will not invent one.

Freedom's own T&C (published 15-May-2026) carries the full 1-Sep-2024 HDFC category schedule verbatim — the caps other HDFC cards are only assumed to have. Base earn is 1 CashPoint per ₹200; the whole card is capped at 15,000 reward points a statement cycle.

Fuel excluded — Named in the CashPoints table's footnote — "Except Fuel, EMI, Rent payments, Govt Related Transactions and Wallet / Gift / Prepaid Card loads & Voucher Purchase transactions"; a 1% fuel-surcharge waiver applies instead
Rent & property management excluded — "With effect from 1st January 2023, Rent payments and Govt Related Transactions will NOT earn Reward Points"
Government / tax excluded — Named beside rent in the same 1-Jan-2023 clause and in the earn table's footnote
Utilities (electricity/water/gas) capped — "Effective 1st September 2024, Reward Points earned on Utility transactions will be capped at 2000 Reward Points per calendar month. Utility MCC: 4900" — about ₹4 lakh of utility spend at 1 point per ₹200
Insurance not applicable
Education full — Full points paid direct to a college/school website or POS machine; ZERO through third-party apps since 1-Sep-2024
Wallet loads excluded — "Effective 1st September 2024, Wallet loading and Easy EMI transactions will NOT earn Reward Points. Wallet MCC: 6540"
Groceries & supermarkets capped — "With effect from 1st January 2023, Reward points earned on Grocery transactions will be capped per month to 1,000 reward points" — half the utility ceiling
Dining & food delivery accelerated — 10 CashPoints per ₹200 on Swiggy — the 10X — inside one ceiling of 2,500 CashPoints a calendar month SHARED with BigBasket, BookMyShow, OYO and Uber, about ₹50,000 of accelerated spend a month. HDFC publishes no split of that ceiling, non-EMI spends only, and a restaurant bill outside Swiggy earns the 1 CashPoint per ₹200 base
Telecom capped — "Effective 1st September 2024, Reward Points earned on Telecom & Cable transactions will be capped at 2000 Reward Points per calendar month. Telecom & Cable MCCs: 4812, 4814, 4899" — HDFC writes "Reward Points" bank-wide; on this CashPoints card that is 2,000 CashPoints, and at 1 point per ₹200 it is about ₹4,00,000 of telecom spend. The cap cannot bind on a phone bill; the ₹0.15 Freedom redeems for is what makes this row small, not the ceiling
Jewellery / gold not applicable
Forex / international spends not applicable
UPI (RuPay-on-UPI only) capped — "For Rupay Credit Cardholders, all UPI spends (Excluding fuel, Wallet / Prepaid Card loads or Voucher Purchases) will earn 1 RP for every Rs.200 spent and is capped at 500 reward points in a calendar month" — the base rate, with its own ceiling
EMI conversions / merchant EMI excluded — Easy EMI named beside wallet loading in the same 1-Sep-2024 clause
  • Fuel · excluded Named in the CashPoints table's footnote — "Except Fuel, EMI, Rent payments, Govt Related Transactions and Wallet / Gift / Prepaid Card loads & Voucher Purchase transactions"; a 1% fuel-surcharge waiver applies instead
  • Rent & property management · excluded "With effect from 1st January 2023, Rent payments and Govt Related Transactions will NOT earn Reward Points"
  • Wallet loads · excluded "Effective 1st September 2024, Wallet loading and Easy EMI transactions will NOT earn Reward Points. Wallet MCC: 6540"
  • Utilities (electricity/water/gas) · capped "Effective 1st September 2024, Reward Points earned on Utility transactions will be capped at 2000 Reward Points per calendar month. Utility MCC: 4900" — about ₹4 lakh of utility spend at 1 point per ₹200

Does your spend count toward the fee waiver?

not published — and we say which

₹50,000 a year is the bar that waives the ₹500 fee. A different question from the one above — earning points and counting toward a threshold are separate rules, and issuers write them separately.

Not published. HDFC Bank states what the HDFC Bank Freedom earns and does not earn, but has not published which spend categories count toward the fee waiver — the ₹50,000 bar. We won't guess it from the earn table or from a sibling card: Axis published three cards' rules on one day and all three lists differed. If you hold this card and have it in writing from the issuer, send us the document and we'll source it.

Open, and it is one of the easiest cards HDFC approves — which is the point of it. Salaried applicants need to be 21–60 with net monthly income above ₹12,000; self-employed 21–65 with annual ITR above ₹6 lakh. HDFC claims ten lakh-plus Freedom cardholders. Application is the standard three-step online flow with video KYC where documents are needed. The ₹500 joining fee is charged up front, and the 500-point welcome benefit is payable only if it was — a lifetime-free or fee-reversed sourcing offer forfeits it.

  • 1 Sept 2026
    Devaluation moderate HDFC Bank
SmartBuy moves Amazon Pay gift cards to 1X under Insta Deals
Amazon Pay Gift Voucher sat in SmartBuy's accelerated tier — 'up to 5X Reward Points or 5% cashback' → 'Insta Deals: 1 % Instant Discount + 1X Reward Points' — this brand is out of the accelerated tier

The most-farmed HDFC voucher route stopped being a points play. SmartBuy's own voucher storefront now shows the Amazon Pay Gift Voucher under a new "Insta Deals" tile reading "1 % Instant Discount + 1X Reward Points", and the page's own description flipped from "up to 5X Reward Points or 5% cashback" to "up to 1X". The comparison that settles it sits on the same storefront: the Amazon Fresh voucher still carries an "Accelerated Rewards — Upto 5X Reward Points RPs / 5% Cashback" block that the Amazon Pay page no longer has, so this is one brand leaving the accelerated tier, not the tier closing. The date, honestly: the Insta Deals offer ("Flat 1% OFF", ₹10,000 monthly limit) was already live in the page's own data on 31 August 2026, the reward line still read 5X in the 1 September 16:26 UTC archive capture, and read 1X when this desk fetched the page on 2 September — so 1 September is the community's effective date sitting inside a window we can bracket from primary captures, not a figure HDFC published. The bank has announced nothing and no SmartBuy page carries a notice. Two pieces of context for the size of it: brand vouchers were already sub-capped at 3,000 accelerated points a month from 1 July 2026, and Amazon Pay vouchers disappeared from the portal entirely for stretches of July and August before returning in this shape. Flipkart and Amazon Fresh vouchers still pay the accelerated rate; the ₹10,000-a-month Amazon Pay lane now pays base earn plus the 1% instant discount.
