How we got this ₹ figure

₹0.70 is our HOUSE value for a point — what a disciplined traveller actually clears, not the best redemption we have ever seen (₹1.00, the ceiling) and not the worst you can always fall back on (₹0.35, the floor). It is the number every route on this page is priced with.

We hold one dated point for Citibank Reward Points — the mark itself. There is no earlier valuation on our record, so this page shows no trend line rather than drawing one. How we value a point →

EXTINCT, AND PRICED ANYWAY — because roughly twenty withdrawn Citi cards on this board published accrual tables in this unit and every one of them read "we can't value this card" for want of a row. Citi India's consumer book went to Axis Bank; on 15 July 2024 the plastic began earning Axis products, and every Reward Point balance was converted into Axis EDGE REWARDS. citibank.co.in is NXDOMAIN. THE VALUE IS DERIVED, AND THE DERIVATION IS THE ACQUIRER'S OWN CLAUSE. Axis's Citi–Axis migration FAQ (June 2024, ref O003496512_06_2024) states the conversion in Q4.1 — "Citi Rewards Credit Card | Axis Bank REWARDS Credit Card | 1 Reward Point = 1.75 EDGE REWARD Points" — and then commits to what it means, verbatim: "Even though there may be changes in the number of reward points on your card(s) post migration, the monetary value of your reward points will continue to remain the same." So a Citi Reward Point is worth 1.75 EDGE REWARD Points by the acquirer's own arithmetic, and `axis-edge-rewards` is marked here at ₹0.40 on the standard 5 RP → 2 partner miles exit. 1.75 × ₹0.40 = ₹0.70. The floor is the same multiple against EDGE's own ₹0.20 Travel EDGE portal rate: 1.75 × ₹0.20 = ₹0.35. Neither number is this desk's guess; both are one published ratio applied to a house value that was set without reference to Citi. THE CEILING IS CITI'S OWN, and it is why the band is not collapsed. Citi priced the unit at par on at least one card in its own words — the Royal Sundaram Gold page, verbatim: "Each Reward Point you earn on your Royal Sundaram Citibank Gold Credit Card is worth Re. 1." That is the issuer's par claim and it is the ceiling. DELIBERATELY NOT THE CEILING: the Citibank Platinum's airline exit, "Call CitiPhone to convert your member Reward Points to airmiles @ 1 Reward Point = 2.5 airmiles". Read at this desk's ₹1-per-partner-mile anchor that would imply ₹2.50 a point, which is nonsense for a 2007 rupee card — the anchor was never established for Jet Airways' or Air India's schemes of that era, CitiPhone no longer answers, and the same conversion is the one that makes the ratio a HISTORICAL FACT rather than a live route. NO TRANSFER ROW, for exactly that reason. The only named partners with a stated ratio are Jet Airways — an airline that stopped flying in April 2019, whose programme became InterMiles and then withdrew full redemption outright — and Air India's pre-merger scheme. A ratio into a dead programme is history. The rule here is the one `intermiles` and `fi-points` were held to: an edge on a partner nobody can transfer to today is an invented route. ONE ROW, NOT SIX, AND THAT IS A JUDGEMENT. Citi named several DIFFERENT units on its co-brands and priced them separately — Talk Points (Hutch airtime, "One Talk Point has a redeemable value of Re. 1"), Auto Points (Maruti, "1 Auto Point = 1 Rupee"), Turbo Points (IndianOil, "1 Turbo Point = ₹1"), First Citizen Reward Points (Shoppers Stop, 60–70 paise) and Club Rewards Points (Diners Club). Those are not this unit and must not be folded into it: each has its own name, its own price and its own single redemption rail. This row is the GENERIC "Citibank Reward Point" that the Platinum, Gold, Silver, Woman's, Reliance, MTV, WWF, CRY, Delhi Metro, Royal Sundaram, Corporate and domestic Rewards cards all named.

Expiry: never, on the cards that said so — the domestic Rewards page reads "your Reward Points will never expire" and the Diners Club International page calls its points "evergreen". The migrated balances kept that: Axis's FAQ says converted points "will continue to remain never expiring", while points earned AFTER migration expire at three years, or on 365 days with "no transaction, no reward redemption and … not logged in to your EDGE REWARDS portal".

    Partner minor Axis Bank
Citibank India credit cards fully migrate to Axis
Citi-branded cards and systems → Axis Bank platform

The Citi era in India formally ends: card numbers and limits stayed put, but statements, apps and rewards now run on Axis. The prized Citi rewards ecosystem effectively closed, pushing its loyalists into the Axis stack.

  • 30 Mar 2022
    Partner major Axis Bank
Axis Bank agrees to buy Citi India's consumer banking arm
Citi India winding down with no confirmed buyer → Axis to acquire Citi cards, retail bank for ₹12,325 cr

Axis Bank signed to take over Citi's ~2.5 million Indian credit cards, retail banking and wealth business for ₹12,325 crore — the biggest shake-up of India's premium card landscape since the RBI bans. Every Citi Prestige and PremierMiles holder now knew exactly whose EDGE Rewards ecosystem they'd eventually land in.

  • 18 Feb 2022
    Launch major Axis Bank
Axis Bank launches Atlas, its dedicated air-miles card
No pure-travel EDGE Miles card from Axis → Atlas: EDGE Miles, airline/hotel transfers, tiered status

Axis rolled out Atlas as its answer to Citi PremierMiles and HDFC's miles cards — a mid-tier ₹5,000 card built entirely around EDGE Miles and transfer partners rather than lifestyle perks. It went on to become one of the most recommended air-miles cards in India within a year of launch.

  • 15 Apr 2021
    Partner major Citibank
Citi announces exit from Indian consumer banking
Citi credit cards, retail and wealth in India → Consumer business up for sale (later to Axis)

Citi called time on its Indian consumer arm — including its cult PremierMiles and Rewards cards — citing a lack of scale. The portfolio would eventually pass to Axis, ending one of India's most-loved rewards ecosystems.

  • 12 Oct 2019
    Devaluation major Citibank India
Citi India guts reward earning on utilities, insurance, and tax
Reward points earned broadly across nearly all spend categories → Utilities, government payments and insurance excluded from earning

Citibank India rewrote its rewards program terms effective October 12, 2019, stripping point-earning from the categories that had quietly become every Rewards Card and PremierMiles holder's favorite grind: utility bills, insurance premiums and government payments. Every major Citi card except the Paytm co-brand and Cashback card got hit, forcing serial point-farmers to route spend through wallet top-ups instead, a workaround that itself wouldn't survive many more devaluations.

Citi PremierMiles' 10X 'Extra' partner program dies for good
10X miles on select partner spends (MakeMyTrip et al.) → 10X only on premiermiles.co.in and direct airline bookings

Citi had already trimmed 'Extra PremierMiles' down to a handful of partners in 2016; by December 2017 even the MakeMyTrip 10X offer expired, ending the program outright. What made PremierMiles worth carrying — stacking 10X on real-world travel spend — was gone, leaving cardholders with a card that only over-rewarded its own booking portal.

  • 1 Apr 2016
Devaluation minor IndusInd Bank / JetPrivilege
IndusInd JetPrivilege card kills weekend miles bonanza
Bonus JPMiles for Jet Airways bookings made on weekends → Weekend bonus scrapped, no advance notice

Effective April 1, 2016, the IndusInd JetPrivilege co-brand quietly stopped paying its weekend earning bonus, one of three simultaneous cuts (alongside Citi Prestige and HDFC Diners) that landed on Indian premium cardholders the same week. It wasn't the biggest devaluation of the season but it stung the specific crowd who'd built a whole booking strategy — Saturday-morning Jet fares — around gaming it.

  • 1 Apr 2016
    Devaluation moderate Citibank
Citi Prestige strips Etihad Guest Gold and partner perks
Complimentary Etihad Guest Gold status, hotel/spa discounts → Status benefit gone, several partner discounts cut

Effective April 1, 2016, Citi Prestige cardholders in India lost their complimentary Etihad Guest Gold membership along with a string of hotel-chain and spa discounts — benefits that had made Prestige one of the more genuinely useful super-premium cards on the market. It landed the same week as the HDFC Diners 10x closure and the IndusInd weekend-bonus cut, making April Fool's Day 2016 an unusually apt date for Indian points geeks to get burned three times over.

  • 1 Feb 2015
    Devaluation major Citibank
Citi PremierMiles doubles the cost of transferring to airline partners
1:1 transfer to airline miles; 1 PM = ₹0.5 cash value → 2:1 transfer ratio; cash value cut 10% to ₹0.45

Effective February 1, 2015, Citibank halved the value of every PremierMile transferred to a partner airline — the ratio moved from 1:1 to 2:1, meaning cardholders now needed two PremierMiles to get one mile of British Airways, Cathay Pacific or other partner currency. Citi also quietly shaved 10% off cash redemptions in the same stroke. It remains one of the sharpest single-day devaluations any Indian travel card has pulled, and it permanently changed how PremierMiles was valued relative to a straight cashback card.

  • 16 Jul 2012
    Launch moderate Citibank
Citibank kills Jet Airways co-brand, pivots to PremierMiles
    Citibank-Jet Airways co-branded card, single-airline miles → Citibank PremierMiles: airline-agnostic, transferable miles

Citibank formally shut down its 13-year-old Jet Airways co-branded card on 16 July 2012, migrating holders (with a 10,000-mile welcome sweetener) to the airline-agnostic PremierMiles card. It was a rare case of a 'devaluation' actually being a buff in disguise — losing a single-airline card turned out to be a lucky escape given what happened to Jet's own frequent-flyer economics later that decade.

    Launch moderate Citibank
Citibank Retires 13-Year Jet Airways Co-Brand, Launches PremierMiles
    Citibank-Jet Airways co-brand since 1999, single-airline miles → Airline-agnostic PremierMiles card; Jet tie-up ends July 16, 2012

Citibank pulled the plug on its 13-year-old Jet Airways co-brand card effective July 16, 2012 and replaced it with PremierMiles, a card earning miles redeemable across any airline instead of betting on one carrier's survival. Given how many Indian airlines were dying around this time, airline-agnostic was the only sane bet left. Existing Jet cardholders got a 10,000-mile bonus to soften the switch.
