Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

Breaks even only by erasing its fee at ₹9,000 a month

At ₹9,000 a month — ₹1,08,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹500 gross (earn ₹500) against a fee of ₹0 — the ₹550 is waived, the spend having cleared ₹1,00,000 a year = ₹500 net — the first rung at or above ₹0. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.

Why #371 The only Union card with a real accelerator: 4% back at HPCL pumps, and the only card on the shelf whose joining fee and annual fee are different numbers. The 4% dies at ₹150 of cashback a billing cycle — about ₹3,750 of fuel — and everything else pays 0.5%.

₹499 + GST

₹0.25 a point, stated on the card's own benefits table — "2 points for every Rs. 100 spend on non-fuel transactions (1 Reward Point = Rs. 0.25)". The fuel rate is quoted the same way and reconciles exactly: "16 reward which would be equivalent to Rs.4.00 cashback on every Rs. 100.00 on fuel spends". Redemption is the Union Rewardz app or unionrewardz.com — merchandise, gift vouchers, "travel experiences" or a credit against your own bill. Union Bank names no airline, no hotel and no transfer partner on any card it issues.

The take

Union Bank's HPCL co-brand, and the most interesting card on its shelf because it is the only one with a rate above 0.5%. Fuel bought at an authorised HPCL outlet on a transaction of ₹500 or more pays 16 reward points per ₹100 — 4% at Union's flat ₹0.25 a point, credited as cashback — plus the standard 1% surcharge waiver on anything over ₹200. The ceiling is where the card lives or dies: ₹150 of cashback a billing cycle, which is ₹3,750 of fuel a month and ₹1,800 a year of value at full stretch. Everything that is not fuel earns 2 points per ₹100, a flat 0.5%, the same as Union's plain RuPay Platinum. The bank advertises "up to 6.5% savings" and that number is three things added together: 4% in reward points on the card, 1% as a surcharge waiver, and 1.5% as HP loyalty points that land in the HP Pay app, not on your card. The last of those is HPCL's currency and is only paid when you pay through HP Pay — treat it as a separate account, not as part of the card's rate. Fees are the shape nothing else at Union has: ₹499 once to get it, ₹550 every year after, and the annual charge is waived if you put ₹1,00,000 through the card in the previous twelve months. Milestones start at ₹1,25,000 of annual spend and pay 500 points, climbing to 2,600 cumulative at ₹2 lakh and then 1,000 for every further ₹50,000. RuPay means it links to UPI, which is the honest reason to hold it alongside anything else. There is no lounge access published anywhere — not on the page, not in the MITC, not in the Key Fact Statement — and no airline or hotel partner exists for these points.

Your renewal — keep, downgrade or cancel

This card reaches break-even by ERASING its fee, not by out-earning it: the waiver is the decision.

₹1,00,000 annual spend erases that fee
₹9,000/mo is where the waiver, not the earn, saves it

Keep, downgrade or cancel

₹550/yr at stake · 5 spend bands

The charge ₹499 joining, then ₹550/yr

The waiver ₹1,00,000 of spend in the year before renewal — about ₹8,333 a month — and the renewal fee is not charged.

Break-even ₹9,000 a month — ₹1,08,000 a year — is where this card's value crosses its fee, and it gets there by erasing the fee at the waiver rather than out-earning it.

₹6,700 a year, net of the fee, at ₹12,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

₹18,700 a year, net of the fee, at ₹36,00,000 of annual spend — this clears the waiver, so no fee is charged

The downgrade

Union Bank of India publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.

If you call to cancel

What the bank offers to keep you is the one fact this desk cannot compute. We are collecting those reports — dated, and only in aggregate — before publishing any: an offer one reader was made is not one you are owed. Called about this card? Tell us what they offered →

The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.

What's good

  • 4% back on HPCL fuel — 16 reward points per ₹100 on transactions of ₹500 or more
  • A further 1% fuel-surcharge waiver on HPCL transactions of ₹200 and above
  • ₹550 annual fee waived on ₹1,00,000 of spend in the previous twelve months
  • Up to ₹300 back on your first HPCL fill of ₹300 or more within 60 days
  • ₹10 lakh of accidental death cover with the premium borne by NPCI, plus an optional ₹10 lakh
  • RuPay, so it links to UPI and pays merchant QR codes directly
  • Milestones from ₹1,25,000 of annual spend, then 1,000 points per ₹50,000 above ₹2 lakh

Watch out

  • The 4% is capped at ₹150 of cashback a billing cycle — roughly ₹3,750 of fuel, then it stops
  • Fuel transactions below ₹500 earn no accelerated cashback at all
  • 0.5% on everything that is not HPCL fuel — 2 points per ₹100 at ₹0.25
  • The advertised 6.5% is 4% + 1% surcharge waiver + 1.5% HP loyalty points; the last lands in the HP Pay app, not on the card, and only if you pay through that app
  • ₹499 to join is a real charge on top of the ₹550 annual fee — the only Union card where the two differ
  • No lounge access is published on the product page, in the MITC or in the Key Fact Statement
  • Union Rewardz has NO airline or hotel partner — the points only pay your own bill or buy vouchers
  • Forex 3% — better than the 3.5% Indian norm, not by enough to take abroad on purpose

What these points actually fly

No live transfer route takes Union Rewardz Points into a programme that publishes an award chart. These points buy catalogue and portal redemptions, not award seats — so this page has no flight to show you, and will not invent one.

What earns, what doesn't

1 sourced rule

The UNI CARBON page defines the base rate as "2 points for every Rs. 100 spend on NON-FUEL transactions" and gives fuel its own rung — so this HPCL co-brand is a card where fuel is simultaneously the headline and, away from HPCL, the one thing that does not earn. Union publishes no merchant-category exclusion list for this variant: the MITC prints one only under the UNICORN and NEXTERIA reward structures, so every other category below is honest absence and is not asserted here.

Fuel accelerated — 16 Reward Points per ₹100 — 4% at Union's own ₹0.25 a point — on fuel transactions of ₹500 or more at authorised HPCL outlets, capped at ₹150 a billing cycle per card, so about ₹3,750 of HPCL fuel a cycle exhausts it. Paying through the HP Pay app adds a 1% fuel surcharge waiver and 1.5% as 6 HP loyalty points into the HP Pay wallet, which Union totals as 6.5%. Fuel bought anywhere else earns nothing: the card's base rate is published as applying to "non-fuel transactions"

Does your spend count toward the fee waiver?

not published — and we say which

₹1,00,000 a year is the bar that waives the ₹550 fee. A different question from the one above — earning points and counting toward a threshold are separate rules, and issuers write them separately.

Not published. Union Bank of India states what the Union UNI-CARBON earns and does not earn, but has not published which spend categories count toward the fee waiver and the milestones — the ₹1,00,000 bar. We won't guess it from the earn table or from a sibling card: Axis published three cards' rules on one day and all three lists differed. If you hold this card and have it in writing from the issuer, send us the document and we'll source it.

MITC v1.4 (effective 25 Sep 2025), fee grid verbatim: "Union UNI CARBON · Rs 499/- · NIL · Rs. 550/- · Rs. 250/-" — the ONLY row on the Union shelf whose joining and annual figures differ, which is why this card carries a `joiningFee` and its siblings do not. Annual fee waived above ₹1,00,000 of previous-12-month usage. Card replacement ₹149. The fuel-surcharge clause carves this card out of the general rule: "1% up to Rs 100/- per month (except Union UNI CARBON Card)" and "For Union UNI CARBON card 1% waiver on transaction value of Rs. 200/- and above at HPCL outlets with a cap of Rs. 100/- per billing cycle". Accidental cover ₹10 lakh NPCI-borne plus ₹10 lakh cardholder-paid; the insurance tables file it as a "RuPay Platinum variant".
