Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied: it earns nothing on utilities and fuel here, so that spend is dropped, not paid at the headline, and stops pacing milestones and the waiver. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

Pays for itself at ₹2,000 a month

At ₹2,000 a month — ₹24,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹200 gross (earn ₹200) against its ₹199 fee = ₹0 net — the first rung at or above ₹0. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.

Utkarsh Small Finance Bank · RuPay · entry

RuPay — The card's own Key Fact Statement prints "Card Association — RuPay" — the only Utkarsh credit card that is not a Mastercard, and the only one that can therefore be linked to UPI. Utkarsh does not advertise a UPI-linked earn rate for it.

Why #276 1% flat in rupees for ₹199, waived at ₹50,000 of annual spend — the cheapest way onto the Utkarsh shelf and, on the arithmetic, a better deal than the ₹1,999 Eternal at any spend below roughly ₹7 lakh a year. It ranks here because there is nothing else on it at all.

₹0 + GST
Joining fee, then ₹199/yr1
₹50,000 spend
Fee waiver

The unit is the rupee, credited against the card account: Utkarsh's MITC says "Cash back credited to Your Credit Card Account will be adjusted towards the balance on Your Next Credit Card Statement." So ₹1.00 is floor, value and ceiling alike. Utkarsh publishes no monthly or annual ceiling on the 1% — what it publishes instead is a twelve-line list of transactions that earn nothing at all.

The take

The cheapest card on the Utkarsh shelf and, on arithmetic alone, the only one whose fee is easy to defend. ₹199 from the second year, waived on ₹50,000 of spend in the previous one, for a flat 1% credited straight against the next statement balance — not points, not a catalogue. Set it beside the ₹1,999 Eternal at 1.25% and the crossover is a long way up: the extra 0.25% has to earn back ₹1,800 a year, which takes roughly ₹7,20,000 of eligible annual spend, and by then you are well past Eternal's own waiver line anyway. For most people on this shelf, SmartGen is the better card. Two things to know before you assume the headline. First the rate: Utkarsh's shared FAQ block says "Flat 1.25% cash back" on every card page it publishes, but SmartGen's own feature list says 1%, and the feature list is the card-specific text — the FAQ is boilerplate that also appears verbatim under Eternal and Rhodium. We record 1%. Second the exclusions, which are the same twelve-line wall the whole shelf carries: wallet loads, financial institutions, government services, charities, foreign-currency purchases, insurance, railway, mutual funds, education, transport, fuel and utility bills earn nothing. That is a lot of ordinary Indian spend taken out of a 1% card. This is also the only RuPay card Utkarsh issues, which in principle means it can be linked to UPI — but the bank publishes no UPI-linked rate for it, so we do not claim one. Interest is the harshest on the shelf at 3.6% a month, 43.2% a year, dropping to 2.5% a month on the FD-backed variant. Forex is 3%, below India's 3.5% norm, on a card with no travel benefit of any kind. No lounge access, no welcome, no milestone, no accelerated category.

The downgrade

Utkarsh Small Finance Bank publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.

If you call to cancel

What the bank offers to keep you is the one fact this desk cannot compute. We are collecting those reports — dated, and only in aggregate — before publishing any: an offer one reader was made is not one you are owed. Called about this card? Tell us what they offered →

The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.

What's good

  • Flat 1% on all eligible transactions, credited against the card balance on the next statement
  • ₹199 renewal fee from the second year, waived on just ₹50,000 of spend in the previous year
  • No joining fee at all — Utkarsh prints a separate joining line and it reads Nil
  • The only RuPay card on the Utkarsh shelf, so the only one that can be linked to UPI
  • 3% foreign-currency surcharge, below India's 3.5% norm
  • 1% fuel surcharge refunded on transactions of ₹400 to ₹5,000, capped at ₹400 a statement cycle
  • Available FD-backed from age 18, with a lower 2.5%-a-month finance charge on that variant

Watch out

  • Utkarsh's own shared FAQ block says '1.25%' on this page — the card's feature list and its marketing both say 1%, and the FAQ text is identical on the Eternal and Rhodium pages
  • Twelve categories earn ZERO: wallet recharges, financial institutions, government services, charities, foreign-currency purchase, insurance, railway, mutual funds, education, transport, fuel and utility payments
  • Interest is 3.6% a month, 43.2% a year — the highest rate Utkarsh publishes on any card (2.5% a month on the FD-backed variant)
  • No lounge access, no welcome benefit, no milestone and no accelerated category
  • Utkarsh publishes no UPI-linked cashback rate for this card despite it being RuPay
  • Cash advance costs 5% or ₹500, whichever is higher, and the cash limit is 20% of the credit limit
  • Rent payments carry a 1% surcharge, capped at 40% of the credit limit in a billing cycle
  • Overlimit is ₹500 or 2.5% whichever is higher, card replacement ₹500, late payment ₹500, and a physical statement ₹50

What these points actually fly

No live transfer route takes Statement cashback (₹) into a programme that publishes an award chart. These points buy catalogue and portal redemptions, not award seats — so this page has no flight to show you, and will not invent one.

Does your spend count toward the fee waiver?

not published — and we say which

₹50,000 a year is the bar that waives the ₹199 fee. A different question from the one above — earning points and counting toward a threshold are separate rules, and issuers write them separately.

Not published. Utkarsh Small Finance Bank states what the Utkarsh SmartGen Credit Card earns and does not earn, but has not published which spend categories count toward the fee waiver — the ₹50,000 bar. We won't guess it from the earn table or from a sibling card: Axis published three cards' rules on one day and all three lists differed. If you hold this card and have it in writing from the issuer, send us the document and we'll source it.

Invite-only — there is no public application form. The bank calls you.

Not a public application. Utkarsh's eligibility block reads "For our existing customers who are holding an active Current Account, Savings Account, FD Account & Loan Account", followed by "Eligible Customers will receive a Pre-Approved/Pre-Qualified Credit Card link on their personal registered email id with the Bank." A relationship first, an invitation second. Two age doors for two variants: 21 to 65 unsecured, 18 to 65 FD-backed, where a fixed deposit becomes the credit limit and the finance charge drops from 3.6% a month to 2.5%. No additional documents beyond current KYC. The card must be activated within 30 days of issuance or it is closed under the RBI's rule, and activation runs through Utkarsh's separate credit-card portal rather than its banking app. Utkarsh markets this variant as its card "Best for Millennials" and publishes no income criterion for it.

The fine print

What the MITC actually says — the rates, fees and cutoffs the brochure skips.

Forex markup 3% + GST
APR 3.6%/mo (43.2%/yr) unsecured; 2.5%/mo (30%/yr) on the FD-backed variant
Late fee ₹500 flat, in addition to the interest payable on the outstanding balance
Cash advance 5% or ₹500, whichever is higher; cash limit 20% of the credit limit
Add-on card No annual fee and no joining fee on supplementary cards
Overlimit ₹500 or 2.5% of the overlimit amount, whichever is higher (minimum ₹500)
Redemption fee Nil — cashback is adjusted against the balance on the next statement, with no redemption request and no minimum

The only RuPay card on the Utkarsh shelf — its KFS prints "Card Association — RuPay", against MasterCard on Eternal and Rhodium — so the only one linkable to UPI, though Utkarsh publishes no UPI-linked cashback rate for it. our published-nil-fee rule TWO-ROW FEE SHAPE: the KFS's Annual Fees cell ends with its own sentence, "No joining fee", and the product page and MITC v2.1 each give joining its own row reading Nil. Annual fee ₹199 from the second year, waived at just ₹50,000 of spend; first year free. Interest is the harshest on the shelf at 43.2% a year. RATE CORRECTION WORTH RECORDING: the shared FAQ block at the foot of every Utkarsh card page says "Flat 1.25% cash back", but SmartGen's own card-specific feature block says 1% twice, and the FAQ sentence is verbatim identical under Eternal and Rhodium — it is shelf boilerplate. We record 1%. Cashback is STATEMENT CREDIT per MITC v2.1 §(m). Twelve categories earn zero (wallet, financial institutions, government, charities, forex purchase, insurance, railway, mutual funds, education, transport, fuel, utilities). Rent 1% surcharge capped at 40% of the credit limit a cycle; fuel surcharge waiver 1% on ₹400–₹5,000, capped at ₹400 a cycle. No lounge access — MITC §(d) names Rhodium only. Utkarsh publishes no income criterion; the gate is an existing banking relationship plus a pre-approved invitation.
