Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

Pays for itself at ₹11,000 a month

At ₹11,000 a month — ₹1,32,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹1,700 gross (earn ₹500 + milestones ₹1,200) against its ₹749 fee = ₹1,000 net — the first rung at or above ₹0. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.

An Essentia Saving Point is worth ₹1 on the catalogue — four Kotak Rewards, the highest per-point rate Kotak gives any card. Take it as cash instead and you get 70 paise, down from ₹1 on 1 June 2025, with a 2,000-point minimum. That single line cut a third off the card's real rate for anyone who redeems to statement credit.

The take

Essentia is a grocery card that reads like a great one until you find the ceiling. Ten Saving Points per ₹100 at departmental stores and grocery shops, and a Saving Point is worth a full rupee — the richest point Kotak issues, four Kotak Rewards each. Ten percent back on the weekly shop. Then the fine print closes in from three directions at once. The transaction has to be between ₹1,500 and ₹4,000, so a ₹900 top-up shop earns nothing on the accelerated rate and a ₹6,000 monthly stock-up earns nothing either. Only 500 Saving Points land in a billing cycle, which is ₹5,000 of qualifying spend a month and ₹500 of value — the whole accelerator is worth ₹6,000 a year at absolute best. And everything outside that basket earns 1 Saving Point per ₹250, which is 0.4%. Against that sits ₹1,499 to take the card out and ₹749 a year to keep it, with Kotak printing NA in both waiver columns — no spend gets you out of either. The milestone helps if you are a big spender: ₹1,25,000 in six months pays six PVR tickets or 1,200 points, so ₹2.5 lakh a year is ₹2,400 of value on top. Below that, a card charging ₹749 to pay 0.4% on most of your spend needs the grocery run to be worth roughly ₹5,000 a month, every month, to break even. Two more things Kotak took away. Since 1 June 2025 a Saving Point redeemed for statement credit pays 70 paise instead of a rupee — a 30% cut on the cash route with no change to the catalogue. And this card is excluded by name from both surcharge waivers: no fuel waiver, no railway waiver, where nearly every other Kotak card has at least one. There is no lounge either; Kotak's India lounge programme names its eligible variants set by set and Essentia is in none of them. Kotak stopped selling it — the product page says so outright — but it is still priced in the current schedule of charges, so a wallet holding one is holding a live card.

The downgrade

Kotak Mahindra Bank publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.

What has changed under this card

  • 8 Sep 2026 Flying Blue splits award tickets into Light / Standard / Flex — a 25% rise for the same product a program these points reach
  • 1 Jun 2025 Kotak's June-2025 fee wave washes over the premium deck issuer-wide
  • 12 Feb 2025 RBI lifts Kotak's ten-month card-issuance ban issuer-wide

If you call to cancel

What the bank offers to keep you is the one fact this desk cannot compute. We are collecting those reports — dated, and only in aggregate — before publishing any: an offer one reader was made is not one you are owed. Called about this card? Tell us what they offered →

The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.

What's good

  • 10 Saving Points per ₹100 at departmental stores and grocery — 10% at ₹1 a point
  • A Saving Point is worth a full rupee on the catalogue, four Kotak Rewards, the richest point Kotak issues
  • 1 Saving Point per ₹250 on everything else, uncapped
  • ₹1,25,000 of spend every six months pays 6 PVR tickets or 1,200 points — up to 12 tickets a year
  • Add-on cards carry the same benefits, with per-card spend limits and separate tracking

Watch out

  • The 10% is capped at 500 Saving Points a billing cycle — ₹5,000 of grocery spend a month, ₹6,000 of value a year, and that is the whole accelerator
  • Accelerated earn only applies to transactions between ₹1,500 and ₹4,000; a smaller shop or a bigger one earns the 0.4% base
  • Neither fee waives at any spend: Kotak prints NA in both waiver columns, and it is ₹1,499 to join on top of ₹749 a year
  • Statement credit pays 70 paise a point since 1 June 2025, down from ₹1, with a 2,000-point minimum
  • Excluded by name from BOTH surcharge waivers — no fuel waiver and no railway waiver, unlike most of Kotak's shelf
  • No lounge access: Kotak's India lounge programme lists its eligible variants set by set and Essentia is in none of them
  • No points at all on utility, education, wallet load, fuel, rent, government, insurance or online skill-based gaming
  • A 1% fee lands on utility spends past ₹35,000 and fuel spends past ₹25,000 in a statement cycle
  • Discontinued for new sourcing — Kotak services existing holders and sells no more

What these points actually fly

No live transfer route takes Kotak Reward Points into a programme that publishes an award chart. These points buy catalogue and portal redemptions, not award seats — so this page has no flight to show you, and will not invent one.

Does your spend count toward the milestones?

not published — and we say which

₹1,25,000 a year is the bar for the first milestone. A different question from the one above — earning points and counting toward a threshold are separate rules, and issuers write them separately.

Not published. Kotak Mahindra Bank states what the Kotak Essentia Platinum earns, but has not published which spend categories count toward the milestones — the ₹1,25,000 bar. We won't guess it from the earn table or from a sibling card: Axis published three cards' rules on one day and all three lists differed. If you hold this card and have it in writing from the issuer, send us the document and we'll source it.

Closed to new applications — existing cardholders keep the card; there is no way in.

You cannot. Kotak's own product page carries the disclaimer: "we have discontinued this product for new sourcing, and same is only displayed for existing Essentia cardholders". The page still shows the old route — "To apply for Essentia SMS KTEN to 5676788" — but the disclaimer overrides it. Existing holders keep the card, keep earning and keep being priced in the current schedule of charges, which is why it is carried here.

Kotak Mahindra Bank publishes no income or age cutoffs for this card. Blank means blank — we don't invent numbers to fill a grid.

Dream Different's unredeemed reward points expire after 30 September 2026
Reward points accrued on the Dream Different Credit Card up to 31 March 2026 sitting in the account with no stated expiry date → A hard forfeiture date — "After 30th September, 2026, any unredeemed Reward Points will automatically expire"

The second half of the note that closed the programme is the part holders can still act on. Kotak's cardholder agreement gives every Dream Different point accrued up to 31 March 2026 a six-month redemption window that shuts on 30 September 2026, after which unredeemed points are forfeited outright. At the agreement's own conversion rate of 25 paise per point, a year of the card's headline 4-points-per-₹100 online earn on ₹1 lakh of online spend is roughly 4,000 points, about ₹1,000 — small money, but money that becomes zero on 1 October. Points redeem against the Kotak catalogue (flights, hotels, vouchers, merchandise) or as a statement credit through the rewards portal or the contact centre, each with its own minimum, so a last-week redemption risks missing the date on processing alone.
