Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied: it earns nothing on utilities and fuel here, so that spend is dropped, not paid at the headline, and stops pacing milestones and the waiver. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

Pays for itself at ₹17,000 a month

At ₹17,000 a month — ₹2,04,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹1,000 gross (earn ₹1,000) against its ₹1,000 fee = ₹0 net — the first rung at or above ₹0. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.

3 notes on the card itself: how it is issued · the network variants · why it ranks #420

City Union Bank · Mastercard · entry

Mastercard — Mastercard Platinum — the physical card, and the tier CUB's reward document prices at 1 RP per ₹125 and ₹0.75 a point. RuPay — Virtual RuPay card on the SAME account, issued alongside the Mastercard so the card is UPI-linkable; a physical RuPay costs ₹250. Earn on the virtual card follows the RuPay table (2 RP/₹150 on UPI, 1 RP/₹150 otherwise), not the Mastercard's 1 RP/₹125.

Why #420 The middle rung of CUB's cricket ladder, and the rung that does the least for a travel reader. Everything that put the Master World on this board — the 0% foreign-currency markup, the 2X on travel and hotels, the ₹1.00 point — is absent here. This variant pays 3.5% forex like the rest of CUB's range, accelerates on apparel and dining instead of travel, earns a slower 1 RP per ₹125, and redeems at ₹0.75. It is carried for completeness of the CSK/SRH family, not recommended.

₹0 + GST
Joining fee, then ₹1,000/yr1
₹3,00,000 spend
Fee waiver

CUB prices its Reward Point per VARIANT and this is the middle rung: ₹0.75 per RP, against ₹1.00 on the Master World and ₹0.50 on the RuPay Platinum. Applied to the card's slower 1 RP per ₹125 earn, the effective rate is 0.6%, not the 0.8% the headline count suggests. Redemption is vouchers and merchandise at rewards.cub.bank.in; there is no transfer partner and no statement credit.

The take

CUB sells six CSK/SRH variants off one Key Fact Statement, and reading them side by side is the fastest way to see what this middle rung is missing. The 0% foreign-currency markup that makes the Master World interesting is written as an exemption for "(CSK/SRH Master World Variant)" alone — this card pays the full 3.5%. The 2X accelerator on "Travel, Flight Bookings, and Hotel Bookings" is also World-only; here the 2X list is "Apparel, Dining, Department Stores, and Food Delivery", which is a shopping card's list, not a travel card's. The base rate is slower too: 1 RP per ₹125, against the World's 1 RP per ₹100. And the point itself is worth less — CUB's §4.1 table prices redemption per variant at ₹1.00 World, ₹0.75 Master Platinum, ₹0.50 RuPay Platinum. Multiply it out and the everyday rate is 0.6%, with the best category, franchise merchandise, reaching 1.8%. Against that, the fee is small and the first year is free: NIL joining, ₹1,000 + GST from year two, waived at ₹3 lakh of annual spend. Below that bar the free RuPay Platinum sibling — same programme, same exclusions, lifetime free — is the better holding even at its slower rate, which is why this one carries a downgrade. There is no lounge access published anywhere in either CUB document, no insurance, no milestone and no welcome bonus, and the points are terminal: vouchers and merchandise at rewards.cub.bank.in with no airline or hotel partner. Buy it if you go to Chepauk; do not buy it to travel.

The downgrade

City Union Bank publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.

If you call to cancel

What the bank offers to keep you is the one fact this desk cannot compute. We are collecting those reports — dated, and only in aggregate — before publishing any: an offer one reader was made is not one you are owed. Called about this card? Tell us what they offered →

The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.

What's good

  • Nil joining fee: the ₹1,000 + GST starts in year two and is waived on ₹3 lakh of annual spend
  • 2X Reward Points on apparel, dining, department stores and food delivery — 1.2% at CUB's ₹0.75 Master Platinum redemption rate
  • 3X on CSK merchandise and match tickets, worth 1.8% — the card's best rate
  • A virtual RuPay card on the same account makes it UPI-linkable at 2 RP per ₹150
  • 1% fuel surcharge waiver on transactions between ₹400 and ₹5,000, capped at ₹500 a statement cycle — the Master band, twice the RuPay Platinum's ₹300

Watch out

  • 3.5% foreign-currency markup — the KFS's 0% exemption names the Master World variant alone, and this is not it
  • No travel accelerator: the 2X on travel, flights and hotels is World-only, and this variant's 2X list is apparel, dining, department stores and food delivery
  • The slowest Mastercard earn in the family — 1 RP per ₹125, against the World's 1 RP per ₹100
  • ₹0.75 per Reward Point, the middle rung of CUB's three-variant table, so the 0.8 RP per ₹100 headline is really 0.6%
  • No lounge access is published anywhere — CUB's Key Fact Statement and reward document are both silent
  • The points are terminal: vouchers and merchandise at rewards.cub.bank.in, with no airline or hotel transfer partner published
  • A long exclusion list earns nothing at all — fuel, rent, utilities and telecom, insurance, education, wallet loads, gold and jewellery, gambling, government payments and cash
  • Surcharges stack on top of the exclusions: 1% on rent, 1% on wallet loads, and 1% on fuel, utility or skill-gaming spend once the cycle crosses ₹50,000 / ₹25,000 / ₹10,000 respectively
  • Revolves at 3.5% a month — 42% a year — on both purchases and cash advances
  • Reward Points round DOWN to whole numbers on every transaction, so small spends leak: CUB's own example turns 1.96 RP into 1
  • CUB reserves the right to modify or withdraw the reward programme, and says points 'may expire as per the Bank's policy' without publishing that policy

What these points actually fly

No live transfer route takes City Union Bank Reward Points into a programme that publishes an award chart. These points buy catalogue and portal redemptions, not award seats — so this page has no flight to show you, and will not invent one.

What earns, what doesn't

12 sourced rules · 9 pay zero

ONE reward document serves all six CSK/SRH variants, and its §5 exclusion table ("Transactions Not Eligible for Rewards") is written once for the family — so the exclusions here are identical to the Master World's and the ranges are just as wide: "Insurance 5960–6399" sweeps in the whole 6000-block of financial institutions, "Government Payments 9000–9999" covers every government MCC there is, and "Utilities & Telecom 4800–4999" swallows 4900 utilities, 4814 telecom, 4899 cable and 4816 computer network services alike. WHAT DIFFERS FROM THE WORLD IS THE ACCELERATOR, and that is the whole story of this row. §2.2 gives this variant "2X Reward Points on Apparel, Dining, Department Stores, and Food Delivery" — a retail list. The 2X on "Travel, Flight Bookings, and Hotel Bookings" is §2.3, Master World only. So airline (4511), hotel (7011) and travel-agency (4722) MCCs earn the BASE rate here, not double: 1 RP per ₹125, which is 0.6% at the ₹0.75 Master Platinum redemption rate. §6 adds two rules that bite quietly: "Each transaction qualifies for only one reward category", so 2X and 3X never stack, and points "are calculated in whole numbers only; any fractional value will be rounded down" — at 1 RP per ₹125 the rounding loss is larger than on the World. Several excluded categories ALSO carry a 1% surcharge under the KFS: fuel, rent, wallet loads and utilities are charged for as well as unrewarded.

Fuel excluded — MCCs 5172, 5541, 5542 and 5983 earn no Reward Points. On top of that the KFS levies a 1% fuel transaction fee once cumulative fuel spend crosses ₹50,000 in a statement cycle, and the 1% fuel surcharge waiver applies only to transactions between ₹400 and ₹5,000, capped at ₹500 of benefit per cycle — the Master band
Rent & property management excluded — MCC 6513 earns nothing, and the KFS adds a 1% rental surcharge on EVERY rent transaction — CUB works the example at ₹200 plus taxes on a ₹20,000 rent payment
Government / tax excluded — "Government Payments | 9000–9999" — the entire government MCC space earns nothing, taxes included
Utilities (electricity/water/gas) excluded — CUB excludes the whole 4800–4999 range under "Utilities & Telecom", which covers 4900 utilities, 4899 cable and 4816 computer network services alike. A 1% utility transaction fee also applies above ₹25,000 of cumulative utility spend in a cycle (MCCs 4814, 4899 and 4900)
Insurance excluded — CUB writes this row as "Insurance | 5960–6399", a range far wider than its label: 5960 is direct-marketing insurance, but 6300 is insurance sales and the span also takes in the 6000-block of financial institutions and money transfer
Education excluded — MCCs 5111, 5192, 5942, 5943, 8211, 8220, 8241, 8244, 8249, 8299 and 8351 earn nothing — note that CUB files stationery (5111), books (5192, 5942, 5943) and childcare (8351) under "Educational Services" alongside the schools and universities
Wallet loads excluded — MCCs 6538–6542 earn nothing, and the KFS charges a 1% wallet load transaction fee on each such transaction (it names 6538, 6539, 6540, 6541 and 6542 individually)
Groceries & supermarkets not applicable
Dining & food delivery full — 2X — dining is on this variant's §2.2 accelerator list, and CUB works the illustration as "Dining Spend (2X category) → Final = 40 RP". 1.6 RP per ₹100, worth 1.2% at the ₹0.75 Master Platinum point. Note the RuPay Platinum's own 2X list (§2.1) DROPS dining, so this is a genuine Mastercard-variant difference
Travel (airlines, hotels, transit) full — Base rate only — NOT accelerated. The 2X on "Travel, Flight Bookings, and Hotel Bookings" belongs to §2.3, the Master World, and this variant's §2.2 list is retail and dining instead. Airline (4511), hotel (7011) and travel-agency (4722) MCCs are on no exclusion list, so they earn the full 1 RP per ₹125 = 0.6%
Telecom excluded — MCC 4814 sits inside the same 4800–4999 exclusion range and earns nothing
Jewellery / gold excluded — MCCs 5094 and 5944 — gold and jewellery earn no Reward Points
Forex / international spends full — CUB states no separate international rate for this variant — only the Master World's §2.3 spells one out — so foreign spend earns the 1 RP per ₹125 base and is on no exclusion list. It runs against the KFS's FULL 3.5% markup, because the 0% exemption names "(CSK/SRH Master World Variant)" alone, so the earn is eaten several times over. One forex-shaped exception: MCC 6051, foreign currency purchase, is excluded under the Cash Transactions group
UPI (RuPay-on-UPI only) not applicable
EMI conversions / merchant EMI not applicable
  • Fuel · excluded MCCs 5172, 5541, 5542 and 5983 earn no Reward Points.
  • Rent & property management · excluded MCC 6513 earns nothing, and the KFS adds a 1% rental surcharge on EVERY rent transaction — CUB works the example at ₹200 plus taxes on a ₹20,000 rent payment
  • Wallet loads · excluded MCCs 6538–6542 earn nothing, and the KFS charges a 1% wallet load transaction fee on each such transaction (it names 6538, 6539, 6540, 6541 and 6542 individually)
  • Utilities (electricity/water/gas) · excluded CUB excludes the whole 4800–4999 range under "Utilities & Telecom", which covers 4900 utilities, 4899 cable and 4816 computer network services alike. A 1% utility transaction fee also applies above ₹25,000 of cumulative utility spend in a cycle (MCCs 4814, 4899 and 4900)

Does your spend count toward the fee waiver?

not published — and we say which

₹3,00,000 a year is the bar that waives the ₹1,000 fee. A different question from the one above — earning points and counting toward a threshold are separate rules, and issuers write them separately.

Not published. City Union Bank states what the CUB CSK Master Platinum earns and does not earn, but has not published which spend categories count toward the fee waiver — the ₹3,00,000 bar. We won't guess it from the earn table or from a sibling card: Axis published three cards' rules on one day and all three lists differed. If you hold this card and have it in writing from the issuer, send us the document and we'll source it.

CUB publishes no income or age criteria for the variant in its Key Fact Statement, and the eligibility panel on its product page is served by script rather than in the page source, so we do not state a threshold we have not read. The identical SRH variant is the same card with a Sunrisers Hyderabad face.

The fine print

7 of 7 MITC rows published

What the MITC actually says — the rates, fees and cutoffs the brochure skips.

Forex markup 3.5% of the transaction amount, plus the same rate on any DCC transaction — the KFS writes a 0% exemption into this row but names "(CSK/SRH Master World Variant)" alone, and this is the Platinum
APR 42%/yr (3.5% a month), on extended credit and cash advances alike — identical across all six CSK/SRH variants
Late fee ₹350 on outstanding dues up to ₹25,000; ₹450 above ₹25,000, levied on the outstanding amount net of any payment received before the due date
Cash advance Up to 3% of the withdrawal or ₹250 whichever is higher in India; up to 3.5% or ₹1,000 whichever is higher abroad, with interest from the withdrawal date
Add-on card ₹500 + GST, one time
Overlimit 3% of the over-limit amount, minimum ₹250, charged only where the cardholder has subscribed to the over-limit facility
Redemption fee Not published — CUB states no redemption fee, and prices the point at ₹0.75 on this variant at rewards.cub.bank.in

FIRST YEAR FREE, AND THE COLUMNS SAY SO THEMSELVES. KFS v5 (13 April 2026) heads its fee table "Joining Fee (INR) (Will be levied after card activation)" and "Annual Fee 2nd year onwards (INR)", and the row "CUB CSK MASTER PLATINUM CREDIT CARD (FIRST YEAR FREE)" reads NIL / "₹ 1000 + GST (waived on spends of ₹ 3L)" / "₹ 500 + GST". So the card carries `joiningFee: 0` beside `annualFee: 1000` and a ₹3 lakh waiver — a quarter of the Master World's fee against a ₹5 lakh bar. THE FOREX ROW IS WHERE THIS VARIANT LOSES: the 0% markup is written as an exemption for "(CSK/SRH Master World Variant)" and for nothing else, so this card pays CUB's full 3.5%. Fuel surcharge waiver is 1% on fuel purchases across India, valid only on transactions between ₹400 and ₹5,000, capped at a maximum benefit of ₹500 per statement cycle — the KFS assigns that band to "CSK/SRH Master Platinum & CSK/SRH Master World" variants and the lower ₹400–₹3,000 / ₹300 band to the RuPay Platinum pair. Four separate 1% surcharges sit outside the waiver: rent (MCC 6513) on every transaction, wallet loads (6538–6542) on every transaction, fuel once cumulative fuel spend crosses ₹50,000 in a cycle, utilities (4814/4899/4900) above ₹25,000 and online skill-based gaming (5816) above ₹10,000. Other charges: limit enhancement ₹200 per occasion, cheque return ₹300, card re-issue or replacement ₹300, statement retrieval ₹50 beyond three months, charge slip ₹250, ATM balance enquiry nil at CUB and ₹50 elsewhere, keychain FOB ₹400, a physical RuPay card for Master Platinum and Master World holders ₹250, EMI conversion 2% (minimum ₹200, maximum ₹1,000) and EMI foreclosure 5% of the outstanding. Grace period runs 20 to 48 days and is suspended if the previous bill is unpaid. The card cannot be used in Nepal or Bhutan for foreign-currency withdrawal. NO LOUNGE CLAUSE APPEARS ANYWHERE IN THE DOCUMENT, and neither does any insurance, golf, concierge, welcome or milestone benefit.
