Skywards Miles earned from June 2027 lose the birth-month expiry cushion
From 1 June 2027, Skywards Miles expire three years after the month they were earned, not at the end of your birth month. Balances already held keep the old rule. The new rule can only shorten a mile's life, by up to eleven months.
Emirates has rewritten how a Skywards Mile dies. Its own programme-updates page says that from 1 June 2027, miles are valid for three years from the flight or partner activity date, rounded to the end of that month. Today they run three years and are then swept at the end of the member’s birth month.
Emirates’ own worked example shows what the birth month was buying. Miles earned on 10 May 2024 expire on 31 July 2027 for a member born in July, and on 31 March 2028 for a member born in March. Under the new rule both would lapse on 31 May 2027. The old rule could add up to eleven months; the new one adds nothing. That makes it a devaluation, if a small one.
What does not change. The new clock applies only to miles earned from 1 June 2027. Miles already in your account, and anything earned before that date, keep the birth-month rule.
For Indian collectors the people who feel it are the co-brand holders. Two open cards on our board earn Skywards on every swipe, ICICI’s Emirates Skywards Emeralde and Sapphiro, so their balances are built a statement at a time and are exactly the kind of slow pile an expiry rule eats. From June 2027 each month’s miles get three years and not a day of birthday grace: redeem on a cadence shorter than that, or watch the oldest tranche lapse. Two bank currencies also transfer in, Amex Membership Rewards and SBI Travel Credits, both at 2:1, and those were always better moved when a seat is in view than parked.
