Amex clips the Emirates Skywards transfer: 1:1 becomes 4:3
American Express cut the Membership Rewards to Emirates Skywards transfer ratio from 1:1 to 4:3 on August 19, 2024 — 1,000 MR points now buy just 750 Skywards Miles, a 25% haircut.
Emirates Skywards was one of the best reasons to hoard Amex Membership Rewards points: a straight 1:1 transfer with zero dilution. That ended on August 19, 2024. The new ratio is 4:3 — 1,000 MR points now land as 750 Skywards Miles.
Call it what it is: an instant 25% tax on every mile moved. The same Emirates redemption now costs a third more MR points than it did the day before.
Platinum Charge and Gold Charge holders sitting on stockpiles for that first-class Emirates redemption had exactly one right move — transfer before the deadline. Anyone who procrastinated paid a real tax on the entire balance the moment it crossed over.
Our take: transferable points are only as good as their best route, and Amex just made one of MR’s best routes 25% worse. Never park points in a transferable currency assuming today’s ratio survives — move them when you have a redemption in hand, not before.
