Emirates Skywards quietly hikes award miles by up to 20%

Emirates raised first and business class award pricing by up to 20% with no announcement, landing the hike in the middle of the Christmas booking rush. Fuel surcharges on the same award tickets kept climbing too.

Emirates just rolled a stealth devaluation across Skywards: first and business class awards now cost up to 20% more miles, with zero press release, zero notice period, and impeccable timing — right through the Christmas booking rush, when nobody is watching award charts.

The mileage hike is only half the damage. Fuel surcharges on the same tickets have kept climbing, so the cash co-pay on a premium Skywards redemption was already heading the wrong way before the miles price moved. Stack the two and a Dubai run that used to merely sting now nukes your balance.

The no-announcement part is the tell. Programs that are proud of their pricing publish it. Programs that raise premium-cabin awards 20% in the week before Christmas are hoping you find out at checkout.

Our take: Skywards was already a surcharge-heavy program that demanded discipline; it now demands more miles on top. If Emirates first is your aspirational redemption, price the full cost — miles plus surcharges — before you feed this program another point.
