Qatar Airways Privilege Club ditches Qmiles, adopts Avios

Qatar Airways scrapped its closed-loop Qmiles currency and converted every member's balance 1:1 into Avios, making balances transferable across British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Qatar.

Qatar Airways has killed Qmiles — and for once, a currency’s death is good news. Privilege Club has adopted Avios as its rewards currency, converting every member’s balance 1:1. Qmiles were a closed loop, incompatible with any other loyalty currency; Avios moves 1:1 across British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and now Qatar.

The headline prize is Qsuites. IAG’s shared currency is suddenly usable for Qatar’s business class, and balances scattered across four programs can be pooled toward it instead of dying in isolation.

For Indian collectors this is a genuine unlock. Amex Membership Rewards holders who’d been sitting on stranded Qatar miles can now combine them with British Airways Avios — one bigger, more useful pot instead of two orphaned ones.

Our take: this is the rare loyalty overhaul that adds value instead of laundering a nerf. Pool your Avios where the redemption is cheapest, and put Qsuites on the shortlist.
