BA devalues Avios on Cathay Pacific and JAL short-haul awards

British Airways raised Avios pricing on short-haul Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines partner awards with zero advance notice, hitting Indian flyers routing through Hong Kong and Tokyo.

British Airways just repriced short-haul Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines redemptions upward — quietly, and with no advance notice. One day the lower regional Avios pricing was there; the next, the same partner awards cost more.

This one stings specifically for Indian Avios holders. Short-haul Cathay and JAL awards are the connective tissue for anyone routing through Hong Kong or Tokyo — the cheap regional hops that made an East Asia itinerary on points actually work. Live From A Lounge flagged the India impact directly, and rightly so.

The no-notice part is the tell. Programs that devalue with warning respect your balance; programs that devalue overnight are telling you what they think your loyalty is worth. This reads like an early tremor, not the earthquake.

Our take: never hold Avios for a redemption you haven’t priced this month. Partner award charts are not contracts, and BA just demonstrated exactly how much notice you should expect next time: none.
