BA Avios long-haul redemptions jump up to 92% outside UK/US

British Airways repriced long-haul Avios redemptions for members booking outside the UK and US, with hikes typically running 45-60% and peaking at 92%. Indian members redeeming out of Delhi or Mumbai take the full hit.

British Airways rewrote its long-haul reward pricing today, and the ugliest numbers were buried where UK bloggers look last: members booking from outside the UK and US. Long-haul Avios redemptions in that bucket jump typically 45-60%, topping out at a 92% increase.

Read that geography again. A UK Amex-voucher holder barely felt this. An Indian member redeeming Avios out of Delhi or Mumbai — the exact person Indian transferable-points programs court with Avios as a marquee partner — got quietly fleeced, with hikes of up to 92% on the same seats.

This is a two-tier devaluation dressed up as a pricing update: protect the home market that generates the noise, extract from everyone else.

Our take: Avios earned its place in Indian points strategies on short-haul sweet spots, not long-haul value — and after today, long-haul Avios redemptions from India are close to indefensible. Keep Avios for the short hops it still prices well, and route your long-haul ambitions through programs that don’t charge you extra for your postcode.
