HDFC Diners Club shutters its 10x rewards blowout

HDFC discontinues the 10x Diners Club promotion — 50 points per ₹150 at Flipkart, IRCTC, Cleartrip, GoIbibo and Yatra — effective April 1, 2016, with no replacement announced.

The best earn rate on the Indian market just disappeared overnight. HDFC quietly closed out its blockbuster 10x Diners Club promotion today — the one that since September 2015 paid Black cardholders 50 points per ₹150 at Flipkart, IRCTC, Cleartrip, GoIbibo and Yatra. That was worth roughly a third of spend back in redeemable points. Effective April 1, 2016, the math is gone. No replacement announced.

Anyone who’d been timing big travel and e-commerce purchases around the promo window — and with returns like that, plenty were — just lost their edge. Six and a half months of 10x, then the door shuts.

It also landed in ugly company: the same week brought the IndusInd weekend-bonus cut and the Citi Prestige benefit strip. Three nerfs, one week, all on Indian premium cardholders.

Our take: a third of spend back was never going to last — the lesson is to burn promotional earn rates the moment they appear, because “discontinued, no replacement” is always how these end.
