Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

Pays for itself at ₹25,000 a month

At ₹25,000 a month — ₹3,00,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹2,000 gross (earn ₹2,000) against its ₹2,000 fee = ₹0 net — the first rung at or above ₹0. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.

Citibank · Diners Club · premium

Diners Club — Not an inference from the name: the card's own page sells the Diners Club Club Lounges "in over 80 countries", the dedicated Diners CitiPhone line, and acceptance "at over 8 million exclusive Merchant Establishments".

Why #869 India's FIRST hotel co-branded credit card, by about sixteen years. The desk's own reading of the market said there were two — Marriott Bonvoy HDFC and HSBC Taj — and both were launched after 2022; this one was on sale in 2008, on the same hotel group as the HSBC card, and it carried a smart chip that settled restaurant bills from points stored on the card itself.

The take

The received wisdom is that India got its first hotel co-branded credit card in 2022, and it is wrong: Citibank and the Taj group were selling one in 2008, on the Diners Club franchise Citi then held. It is a strange and rather wonderful product. The card carried a smart chip that stored your Epicure Points on the plastic itself, so settling a Taj restaurant or hotel bill with them was a card-present transaction at the till rather than a redemption request — present the card, the cashier deducts the points, done, a week after the spend was incurred. Three separate point types ran on it at once: Epicure Points from Taj food and beverage spend, InnerCircle Points from rooms, laundry, telecom and business-centre charges at Taj properties, and Diners Club Rewards Points from everything you spent anywhere else, which converted into Epicure Points at a published rate. Approval brought automatic Taj InnerCircle Silver — priority waitlisting, double occupancy at no extra cost, ten per cent off published leisure tariffs, discounts on laundry, telecom and the business centre, fruit and flowers in the room — plus two vouchers a year for half off the weekend rate in select metros, priority restaurant reservations, complimentary health club and sauna while staying, and free Wednesday entry to the Taj discotheques, which is a sentence no card page would write today. Travel House handled tickets at a discount on domestic and international base fares. It cost ₹2,000 a year, flat. The arithmetic, from Citi's own two lines: an Epicure Point was worth ₹10 and Taj food and beverage paid one per ₹100, so eating at a Taj paid ten per cent back, twelve if you were InnerCircle Gold. Everything else paid a Club Rewards Point per ₹100 at fifteen to an Epicure Point — sixty-seven paise, or 0.67%. The InnerCircle Points on rooms and laundry are the one rung nobody ever put a price on, and this desk does not either.

The downgrade

Citibank publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.

What the bank offers to keep you is the one fact this desk cannot compute. We are collecting those reports — dated, and only in aggregate — before publishing any: an offer one reader was made is not one you are owed. Called about this card? Tell us what they offered →

The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.

What's good

  • India's first hotel co-branded credit card, on sale in 2008 — the market's own count starts fourteen years later
  • Automatic Taj InnerCircle Silver: priority waitlisting, double occupancy at no extra cost, and discounts on tariff, laundry, telecom and the business centre
  • A smart chip that stored Epicure Points on the card and settled Taj restaurant and hotel bills with them at the till
  • Two vouchers a year for half off the published weekend tariff at Taj hotels in select metro cities
  • Discounted domestic and international base fares booked through Travel House, and complimentary Diners Club lounges

Watch out

  • WITHDRAWN — Citibank no longer issues Diners Club cards in India and its page for this card no longer resolves
  • Ten per cent back was Taj food and beverage ONLY — everything else paid 0.67%, and the two rates are fifteen times apart
  • Taj InnerCircle Points, earned on rooms, laundry, telecom and the business centre, were never given a rupee value by anyone; that rung is carried unpriced
  • Every point was a closed loop — redeemable at IHCL properties or against the Diners catalogue, never transferable and never cash
  • The Diners Club franchise in India has since moved to HDFC Bank; Citibank's consumer book went to Axis in 2023, and no Diners product was part of it

What these points actually fly

No live transfer route takes Diners Club Rewards Points (Citibank India) into a programme that publishes an award chart. These points buy catalogue and portal redemptions, not award seats — so this page has no flight to show you, and will not invent one.

    Devaluation minor HDFC Bank
HDFC swaps daily insurance-reward caps for tighter monthly ones
Daily reward caps on insurance-category spend → Monthly caps: 10,000 pts (Infinia), 5,000 pts (Diners Black)

Effective 1 July 2025, HDFC replaced its daily insurance-spend reward cap with a flat monthly ceiling — 10,000 points for Infinia, 5,000 for Diners Black, Diners Black Metal, H.O.G. Diners Club and BizBlack Metal. Insurance premiums (LIC, health cover renewals) were a favourite low-effort way to hit big point totals; a monthly ceiling closes most of that gap regardless of how the spend is timed across the month.
