What it's worth to you, after the fee
Welcome: Not published — Amex's Gold Credit Card page describes the card's benefits and names no joining offer
Not valued. We can't value this card until the issuer publishes a fee — every net-value number here would be wrong by exactly the fee we can't find. Everything we can source — the earn rate, the transfer routes, the lounge doors — is above and stands on its own; this card is simply not on the board, not in the calculator, and cannot win a best-of call until American Express publishes a fee schedule we can cite.
Why we decline to value some cards, and what it takes to change that →
3 notes on the card itself: how it is issued · the network variants · why it ranks #982
Why #982 CHARGE IS NOT CREDIT, and this is the half of the pair almost everyone forgets. American Express ran two Gold products in India side by side — the Gold Card, a charge card with no pre-set spending limit, and this, a revolving credit card that let you carry a balance. Its own navigation listed them as separate products with separate pages. Carried, not ranked: the accrual is sourced and the fee is not.
One Membership Rewards point per ₹40 is 2.5 points per ₹100, and MR houses at ₹0.50 on this desk, so the points arm of this card returned 1.25% — two and a half times the base rate of the Gold Charge card beside it, which paid 1 point per ₹50. The cash-back arm was a separate election worth up to 2%, and you could not run both.
Best real exit: Virgin Atlantic Flying Club at ₹0.80/pt (5:4 transfer, above house value).
The take
American Express sold two Gold cards in India at the same time and they were not the same product. The Gold Card is a charge card: no pre-set spending limit, balance settled in full every month. This one was a credit card, and its whole pitch was the difference — a credit limit Amex advertised as up to 25% higher than the card you already held, and the freedom to spread payments over time at a monthly interest rate rather than clear the statement. Then it did something no other Amex in India did: it made you choose your own reward currency. Elect Membership Rewards and every ₹40 earned a point — 2.5 points per ₹100, which at the desk's ₹0.50 house value is 1.25%, comfortably better than the 1 point per ₹50 the Gold Charge paid. Elect the CashBack programme instead and you got up to 2% of your spending back as money. One or the other, never both, and the choice mattered: the points route is the one that reaches an airline, because Membership Rewards transfers and cash back does not. Around that sat the ordinary Amex furniture of the era — free emergency card replacement usually inside two business days almost anywhere in the world, loss liability capped at ₹1,000 before you report a missing card and nothing after, and a network of 1,700 travel service offices across 130 countries. What Amex never printed, on this page or on the index above it, is what the card cost. That is why it is carried here and not ranked: an unsourced fee is not a free card.

Keep, downgrade or cancel
what we can and cannot price
Not valued. We can't value this card until the issuer publishes a fee — every net-value number here would be wrong by exactly the fee we can't find. A break-even is the spend at which value crosses a fee, and we are short one side of that sentence — so this desk prints no ladder, no crossing and no ₹0 standing in for either. What we can source about this card is under Sources.

The downgrade
American Express publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and we cannot price either side of it.

What's good
- 1 Membership Rewards point per ₹40 — 2.5 per ₹100, against the Gold Charge card's 2
- A credit limit Amex advertised as up to 25% higher than your existing credit card
- Your choice of reward programme: Membership Rewards points, or up to 2% back in cash
- Free emergency card replacement, usually within two business days, virtually anywhere in the world
- Loss liability capped at ₹1,000 before you report the card missing, and nil after
Watch out
- Withdrawn: Amex India's live Credit Card MITC prices five credit cards and this is not among them, and the product page survives only in the archive
- No fee is published anywhere Amex still serves, so this card is carried on the board and left out of every ₹ calculation
- Membership Rewards and CashBack were mutually exclusive elections — take the cash and the points never existed
- The cash-back arm reaches no airline and no hotel; only the Membership Rewards election puts the card in the transfer graph
- The balance transfer facility Amex advertised on this card was withdrawn while the card was still on sale — its own page says so
- Amex India's card acceptance still trails Visa and Mastercard, and did so far more sharply in this card's era

Closed to new applications — existing cardholders keep the card; there is no way in.
You cannot. The Gold Credit Card is gone from every document American Express India still serves, and there is no successor: the modern range splits into charge cards (Platinum, Gold) and credit cards (Platinum Reserve, Platinum Travel, Membership Rewards, SmartEarn), and none of them is a Gold-branded credit card. A reader who wants MR on a revolving line is being pointed at the Membership Rewards Credit Card today.
American Express publishes no income or age cutoffs for this card. Blank means blank — we don't invent numbers to fill a grid.

- 1 Oct 2026Amex Platinum loses Lufthansa Lounge access with no replacementComplimentary access to participating Lufthansa Lounges for eligible Platinum Card Members, through 30 Sep 2026 → From 1 Oct 2026 Platinum Card Members have no access to any Lufthansa Lounge; no substitute benefit announced
Announced in July 2026, effective 1 October: eligible Platinum Card Members lose access to every Lufthansa Lounge, and Amex has named nothing to put in its place. Access runs through 30 September, so there's a two-month window to use it. For Indian Platinum holders the Lufthansa rooms were the good half of a Frankfurt or Munich connection — Priority Pass and the Global Lounge Collection still cover the airports, but not with a Senator-grade product. It's the third clip to the same card's lounge stack in one quarter, after Mumbai's Centurion closed on 1 July and Centurion guest access halved on 8 July. Amex India's ₹66,000 metal card is being asked to justify itself on Fine Hotels + Resorts and hotel status, not on doors.
- 1 Oct 2026Amex bolts a ₹1 lakh spend gate onto Platinum Travel's domestic lounge access
- 1 Oct 2026Platinum Travel's domestic lounge access gets a ₹1 lakh prior-quarter spend gate8 complimentary domestic lounge visits a year, capped at two per quarter, with no spend condition anywhere. → Up to two complimentary domestic visits in a calendar quarter, EARNED by spending ₹1 lakh or more in eligible transactions in the preceding calendar quarter.
Same notice, three weeks later, and it lands on the other half of what this card is for. "From October 1, 2026, complimentary domestic airport lounge access will be linked to quarterly spending on the card. To receive up to two complimentary domestic airport lounge visits in a calendar quarter, a cardmember will need to have spent INR 1 lakh or more in eligible transactions in the preceding calendar quarter." The visit COUNT does not change — two a quarter, eight a year, exactly as before. What changes is that they stop being something you hold and start being something you earn, and ₹4 lakh a year of spend is now the price of a benefit that used to come with the ₹5,000 fee. On a card sold to travellers rather than to heavy spenders, that is a real withdrawal: the ₹1.9 lakh milestone deleted in September was the rung a moderate spender actually reached, and now the lounges want ₹4 lakh a year too. CARRY THE TRANSITIONAL RUNG, because it applies to exactly one quarter and then vanishes. CardInsider's report of the same notice adds what the first report did not: "As a one-time exception, for the October–December 2026 quarter, cardholders will need to have spent ₹70,000 or more between July and September 2026 to qualify for lounge access." So the gate for the first affected quarter is ₹70,000, not ₹1 lakh — and July and August of that window are already spent by the time most readers learn this, which is what a one-time exception announced seven weeks ahead really means.
