SBI Card starts charging late fees on dues of ₹101–₹500
From 1 May 2026, missing an SBI Card payment of ₹101 to ₹500 costs ₹100 instead of nothing, and the ₹501–₹1,000 slab rises from ₹400 to ₹500. Every slab above ₹1,000 stays put.
What changed
Fee change · SBI Card
Before
Late payment charge nil up to ₹500 outstanding; ₹400 for ₹501–1,000
After
Nil up to ₹100; ₹100 for ₹101–500; ₹500 for ₹501–1,000; ₹750 / ₹950 / ₹1,100 / ₹1,300 slabs unchanged
SBI Card’s revisions notice, reported on 29 March 2026, ends the free ride on small missed payments on 1 May 2026. In SBI Card’s words: “W.e.f. 1 May 2026, Late Payment Charges (LPC) will be revised to Rs.100 for Outstanding Amount Due greater than Rs.100 up to Rs.500; and Rs.500 for Outstanding Amount Due greater than Rs.500 up to Rs.1,000. Rest of the charges remain unchanged.”
Only the bottom of the ladder moves:
| Amount due | Before 1 May 2026 | From 1 May 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ₹100 | Nil | Nil |
| ₹101–₹500 | Nil | ₹100 |
| ₹501–₹1,000 | ₹400 | ₹500 |
| Above ₹1,000 | ₹750 / ₹950 / ₹1,100 / ₹1,300 slabs | Unchanged |
What it costs you. A forgotten ₹300 bill used to cost nothing; it now costs ₹100. A missed ₹800 bill costs ₹500, up from ₹400. Large balances were already in the ₹750–₹1,300 slabs and stay there, so this is a fee aimed squarely at the small, forgotten statement — the leftover subscription charge on a card you barely use.
The fix is boring and total: put every SBI card you hold on auto-debit for at least the minimum due. A card you keep only for its lounge visits or a milestone is exactly the card that runs up a ₹300 balance nobody looks at.
