Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

Pays for itself at ₹9,000 a month

At ₹9,000 a month — ₹1,08,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹500 gross (earn ₹500) against its ₹500 fee = ₹0 net — the first rung at or above ₹0. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.

2 notes on the card itself: how it is issued · why it ranks #897

Citibank · Not published · entry

Why #897 A weekend-accelerated cash card with a stated rupee value per point and, unusually, an airline exit — Citi named three carriers by name. Carried because that combination has no descendant on this board and because it is repeatedly confused with the Citi Cash Back card, which it is not.

The take

This is the card people mean when they misremember the Citi Cash Back card as having had an accelerator, and it is worth separating the two because they are genuinely different products with different mechanics. The Cash Back card paid a percentage straight to your statement. This one paid a Cash Reward Point, which Citi priced at a rupee, and it paid five times as many of them on Saturdays and Sundays as on weekdays — an accelerator keyed to the calendar rather than to a merchant category, which almost nothing on the Indian market does today. The redemption menu is the other surprise. Points came out as a statement credit, at the billing counter at Landmark, Westside and Shoppers Stop, as catalogue gifts, as vouchers at online shops — and as air miles on a full-service airline, with Citi naming Jet Airways, Kingfisher and Indian Airlines. That is an airline door on an entry-level cash card, and all three carriers have since either died or been absorbed. Citi also sold it on a headline interest rate rather than on rewards, which tells you who it was aimed at. It cost nothing to take and ₹500 a year to keep. Long withdrawn.

The downgrade

Citibank publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.

If you call to cancel

What the bank offers to keep you is the one fact this desk cannot compute. We are collecting those reports — dated, and only in aggregate — before publishing any: an offer one reader was made is not one you are owed. Called about this card? Tell us what they offered →

The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.

What's good

  • Free to take and ₹500 a year to keep — Citi printed the first-year fee as zero on a separate line from the renewal
  • Citi priced its own unit: a Cash Reward Point carried a stated value of one rupee
  • The accelerator was the CALENDAR, not a category — Saturday and Sunday spends earned at five times the weekday rate
  • Points came out as a statement credit, at the Landmark, Westside and Shoppers Stop billing counters, as gifts, or as air miles on a named full-service airline
  • Citi sold it on a headline interest rate it called best-in-class, which the fee illustration priced against an industry rate of 37.2% a year

Watch out

  • WITHDRAWN — gone from Citi India's range before the Axis Bank handover, and not one of the nine products on Axis's Forward Together site
  • NOT THE CITI CASH BACK CARD this board also carries: that one pays a percentage to the statement, this one paid a priced point on a weekday/weekend split
  • THE AIRLINE EXIT NAMED THREE CARRIERS AND ALL THREE ARE GONE: Jet Airways, Kingfisher and Indian Airlines
  • The weekend rate depended on the date the MERCHANT submitted, not the date you spent — Citi disclaimed responsibility for the difference in writing
  • The headline 0.50% is the WEEKDAY rate — five days in seven earn a quarter of what Saturday and Sunday do, so the card only works for someone who can move spend onto the weekend
  • The airline exit is priced NOWHERE: Citi named three carriers and published no conversion ratio, so the ₹1 a point comes from the statement-credit rail and nothing here claims a miles value
  • No lounge access, no co-brand, no travel accelerator and no forex concession

What these points actually fly

No live transfer route takes Citibank Cash Reward Points into a programme that publishes an award chart. These points buy catalogue and portal redemptions, not award seats — so this page has no flight to show you, and will not invent one.

You cannot. The card was withdrawn from Citi India's range before the bank sold its Indian consumer business to Axis Bank, and citibank.co.in no longer resolves. The Citi Cash Back Credit Card, which is a different product, is the one that survived to the handover and is on this board with its own page.
