RuPay credit cards go live on UPI

RBI-enabled RuPay credit-card-on-UPI launches, letting credit cards pay at millions of UPI QR merchants for the first time.

Until today, credit cards couldn’t touch UPI. That wall just came down. RBI-enabled RuPay credit-card-on-UPI is live, and RuPay credit cards can now be linked to UPI and used at the millions of QR codes plastered across every kirana counter, chai stall and cab dashboard in the country.

This is a structural shift, not a feature launch. The entire long tail of Indian commerce — merchants who never installed a card terminal and never will — just became reward-earning territory. Every scan-and-pay transaction that used to route through a zero-reward bank account can now run through a credit card instead.

It starts with RuPay only, which is exactly why it matters for this desk: expect a wave of RuPay co-brand cards built specifically to farm QR spend. Where Indian card rewards can be earned just got redrawn.

Our take: the biggest earning-surface expansion Indian cards have ever had — link a RuPay credit card to UPI and stop leaving QR spend on the table.
