ICICI Bank launches Emeralde, wedging above Sapphiro
ICICI Bank soft-launched the Emeralde credit card on January 18, 2019, slotting it above Sapphiro with a claimed ~₹3 lakh in annual benefit value against a ₹12,000 annual fee. It's ICICI's first genuine super-premium travel card.
ICICI Bank has soft-launched the Emeralde, a new card that slots in above the Sapphiro at the top of its travel-and-rewards lineup. The pitch: roughly ₹3 lakh in annual benefit value against a ₹12,000 annual fee — a 25:1 headline ratio that ICICI clearly wants you to repeat at dinner parties.
Until today, Sapphiro was the ceiling at ICICI, and it was never a real answer to what HDFC has been running at the top of the market. The Emeralde changes the shape of the conversation: for the first time, ICICI has a genuine super-premium travel card built to compete with the Infinia and Diners Black.
Our take: treat the ₹3 lakh figure as marketing arithmetic — issuer benefit valuations always are — but take the launch itself seriously. HDFC’s super-premium duopoly finally has a challenger with a ₹12,000 fee and top-tier ambitions, and competition at the top of the Indian card market is good for everyone holding points. Sapphiro loyalists should watch this space.
