Amex Gold Charge Card raises the bar to earn Membership Rewards

From July 1, 2017, American Express raised the spend threshold on the Gold Charge Card's monthly transaction bonus — the 1,000 Membership Rewards points that previously required 4 transactions of ₹1,000 a month now demand more spend for the same reward.

American Express has quietly reworked the Gold Charge Card’s signature trick. The monthly transaction-count bonus — previously 1,000 Membership Rewards points for 4 transactions of ₹1,000 a month — now carries a higher spend threshold for the same 1,000 points, effective July 1, 2017.

That bonus is the core earn mechanic of this card. The 4x₹1,000 routine was beloved precisely because it was gameable: four modest transactions, a guaranteed 1,000 MR points, every month, like clockwork. Amex just made the clockwork more expensive to wind.

There’s no dressing this up, though Amex tried, packaging it as a program update. As the era’s most-read India points blog put it plainly: Amex is asking for more spend to earn the same reward.

Our take: when a card’s best feature is a formula, watch the formula, not the marketing. The Gold Charge’s monthly bonus still exists — it just pays less per rupee than it did yesterday, and that is the definition of a devaluation.
