Centralcard launches — India's first credit card

Central Bank of India launched Centralcard in 1980, India's first credit card, marking the start of revolving credit on plastic in the country. This launch paved the way for future credit card issuance in India.

Central Bank of India launched Centralcard, the first credit card issued by an Indian bank, in 1980. The card was usable only within India and marked the beginning of revolving credit on plastic in the country. Awareness and uptake were slow due to thin telecom infrastructure and lack of awareness.
