Welcome: Not published — ESAF states no welcome, activation or first-transaction benefit on this card

Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

Pays from the first rupee

At ₹1,000 a month — ₹12,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹200 gross (earn ₹200) against its ₹0 fee = ₹200 net — at or above ₹0 from the first rung we price. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.

RuPay

Why #406 ESAF's only consumer credit card, and a better-priced one than the small-finance shelf usually manages: 1.25% back with nothing to join, nothing a year and a 2.5% forex surcharge. It ranks where a secured card with no lounge and no transfer partner belongs, and the rate is held honestly rather than confidently — the product page says 1.25% "on all bill amounts" while the MITC says cashback is earned only "at eligible merchant categories" ESAF has never enumerated.

The take

ESAF is a Kerala small finance bank with exactly one consumer credit card, and the card is better than the shelf it sits on. The MITC states the fee twice, in the same six words both times: "No annual fee and joining fee." Add-on cards are free. Transaction service charges are nil. Foreign currency carries a 2.5% surcharge, a full point under the Indian norm and the same rate its FD-backed peer Suryoday charges. And the headline rate is 1.25%, which is two and a half times what Suryoday's secured pair pays and more than most unsecured entry cards from far larger banks. That combination — free, secured, 1.25%, cheap forex — is genuinely unusual. Now the caveats, and they matter in proportion. ESAF sells this as an FD-backed card; the apply funnel on its own site is labelled "FD Backed Credit Card" and the MITC contemplates lien-marked deposits and their liquidation on default. The 1.25% is advertised "on all bill amounts", but the MITC's cash-back clause says cashback is earned "by making a purchase transaction at eligible merchant categories" and reserves ESAF's right to change those categories at will, without publishing what they currently are. No cap on the rate is published anywhere, which is either generous or unwritten. The programme is run with 42 Card Solutions as manager, so campaign terms arrive by SMS rather than on the website — the 25 June to 25 July 2026 fuel campaign, 5% capped at ₹250 an account and aimed only at dormant cardholders, is the shape of them. Insurance is ₹2 lakh of personal accident and permanent disability cover, and there is a 24/7 concierge that books travel and hotels. No lounge is claimed anywhere.

The downgrade

ESAF Small Finance Bank publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.

If you call to cancel

What the bank offers to keep you is the one fact this desk cannot compute. We are collecting those reports — dated, and only in aggregate — before publishing any: an offer one reader was made is not one you are owed. Called about this card? Tell us what they offered →

The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.

What's good

  • 1.25% cashback, in ESAF's own words 'on all bill amounts' — more than most unsecured entry cards from far bigger banks
  • Free forever, stated twice in the MITC: 'No annual fee and joining fee', and add-on cards are free too
  • 2.5% foreign currency surcharge, a full point under the 3.5% Indian norm
  • Personal accident and permanent disability cover of up to ₹2 lakh
  • 24/7 concierge covering travel bookings, hotel reservations and consultancy
  • FD-backed, so it opens a card to an applicant with no bureau file or income proof

Watch out

  • ESAF publishes NO cap on the 1.25% — not in the MITC, not in the Schedule of Charges, not on the product page. Treat an uncapped headline from a small bank as a number that can move
  • The page says 1.25% 'on all bill amounts'; the MITC says cashback is earned 'at eligible merchant categories' and reserves ESAF's right to modify those categories at its sole discretion — and it never lists them
  • Revolves at 3% a month, an APR of 36.5%, and a cash advance costs 5% or ₹500, whichever is higher — the steepest cash-advance fee on this board's small-finance shelf
  • Late payment is a flat ₹500 and card replacement is ₹500
  • No lounge access of any kind is claimed on this card
  • The programme is operated with 42 Card Solutions as manager, and campaign offers reach cardholders by SMS or email rather than the website — the June–July 2026 fuel campaign was 5% capped at ₹250 an account and open only to dormant or inactive cards
  • Cashback is money credited to a card account: it reaches no airline, no hotel and no transfer partner

What these points actually fly

No live transfer route takes Statement cashback (₹) into a programme that publishes an award chart. These points buy catalogue and portal redemptions, not award seats — so this page has no flight to show you, and will not invent one.

The fine print

6 of 7 MITC rows published

What the MITC actually says — the rates, fees and cutoffs the brochure skips.

Forex markup 2.5% of the value of the foreign currency transaction after conversion to INR — a full point under India's 3.5% norm
APR 36.5%/yr (a daily finance charge of 0.1%, equivalent to 3% a month on a 30-day month), on both revolving credit and cash advances
Late fee A flat ₹500, with no statement-balance bands
Cash advance 5% of the cash advance or ₹500, whichever is higher — the steepest cash-advance fee on this board's small-finance shelf
Add-on card No annual fee on add-on cards
Overlimit not published
Redemption fee None — cashback is credited directly to the card account, reducing the outstanding balance, so there is nothing to redeem

LIFETIME FREE, STATED TWICE IN THE SAME SIX WORDS. ESAF's MITC v23 (updated May 2025) reads "Annual Fees | No annual fee and joining fee." in the Fees & Charges table and again in Annexure 1's Schedule of Charges, so the card file carries annualFee 0 with no joiningFee key. Transaction service charges are nil; e-statements are free and a physical statement is ₹50; card replacement ₹500; return payment charge 2.5% of the returned amount. THE RATE AND ITS UNSTATED SCOPE: the product page says "Earn 1.25% cashback on all bill amounts (T&C apply*)", while the MITC's Cash Back Program clause says cashback is earned "by making a purchase transaction at eligible merchant categories" and reserves ESAF's right to modify those categories at its sole discretion — and never lists them. NO CAP ON THE 1.25% IS PUBLISHED ANYWHERE, which the card file records as a risk rather than filling with a guess. The card is FD-backed: ESAF's own apply funnel is labelled "FD Backed Credit Card" and the MITC contemplates lien-marked deposits — "we may liquidate the fixed deposit if the Credit Card Account is overdue". A 1% surcharge applies to rental payments, with no more than 40% of the credit limit usable for rent in a calendar month; the fuel-surcharge waiver is limited to ₹40,000 a calendar month with no single transaction over ₹8,000. Personal accident and permanent disability cover up to ₹2 lakh, plus a 24/7 concierge covering travel and hotel bookings. NO LOUNGE ACCESS IS CLAIMED. RuPay. The programme is operated with 42 Card Solutions Pvt. Ltd. as manager, and campaign offers reach cardholders by SMS or email rather than the website. The MITC is near-identical boilerplate to Suryoday's, down to the ₹40,000 / ₹8,000 fuel-waiver ceiling.
