Priced on the everyday mix — 30% groceries · 10% utilities · 20% travel · 6% fuel · 34% everything else — with this card's published category rules applied. Plus milestones, minus the fee. No accelerator credit — the ranking model on /compare adds ~20% of spend at the card's best accelerator, so its ₹ for this card reads higher.

At ₹1,000 a month — ₹12,000 a year — on the everyday mix this card returns ₹100 gross (earn ₹100) against its ₹0 fee = ₹100 net — at or above ₹0 from the first rung we price. The ladder runs in ₹1,000 steps to ₹1,00,000 a month and ₹10,000 steps to ₹5,00,000; figures are rounded to the hundred, and the accelerator is never credited.

Barclays Bank · Not published · entry

Why #916 The plain rung of a foreign bank's short-lived Indian card book, and its pitch was not rewards but CONTROL — you set the billing date, you set the minimum payment, you set the credit limit. Free for life. Carried for the record; Barclays left Indian consumer cards.

The take

Barclaycard Gold was the base of the shelf and it is worth reading for what it did NOT sell. There is no lounge, no partner, no co-brand, and at launch there were no rewards at all — the 2007 page ends its feature list with "Keep an eye out for more rewards and benefits coming soon", which is an unusually honest thing to print on a product page. What it sold instead was control: choose which week of the month Barclays bills you, choose whether your minimum payment is 5%, 7% or 10% of the balance, and adjust your own credit limit to cap your spending. For a market where the issuer decided all three, that was the pitch. It was free for life, and Barclays said so in three separate places — the feature list, the fees block, and the tariff schedule attached to the MITC, whose "Other Barclaycards" column reads NIL against joining, first-year and renewal alike. Fifty days of interest-free credit, a fraud-protection guarantee, free utility bill payment through Visa Bill Pay, and a promotional 0% on balance transfers for three months against a 2% handling fee. Rewards did arrive later: BarclaycardPoints, at the same rate across the Gold, the Times card, the Yatra Platinum and the football card, redeemable for vouchers from a catalogue that also reached Jet Airways and Indian Airlines miles. The thing to know before envying the zero fee is the interest model, which is the most interesting thing on the whole Barclays India shelf. The rate was not fixed. It opened at a boarding rate for three months and was then reviewed every six months and set anywhere between 2.5% and 3.7% a month on your own usage, repayment pattern and credit-bureau record. Risk-based pricing on an Indian credit card, in 2009.

The downgrade

Barclays Bank publishes no document naming a card you can step down to, so we name none — an invented product change is a phone call you would waste. That leaves keep or cancel, and the numbers above are the whole of it.

If you call to cancel

What the bank offers to keep you is the one fact this desk cannot compute. We are collecting those reports — dated, and only in aggregate — before publishing any: an offer one reader was made is not one you are owed. Called about this card? Tell us what they offered →

The desk publishes subscribable .ics feeds for the dates it knows — offer deadlines, devaluations, expiry audits. Your renewal date is not one of them: only your statement knows it.

What's good

  • Free for life — no joining fee and no annual fee, stated on the product page and in Barclaycard's own tariff schedule
  • Choose your own billing week, and set your minimum monthly payment at 5%, 7% or 10% of the balance
  • Adjust your own credit limit down to cap your spending
  • BarclaycardPoints on ordinary spend, redeemable against a voucher catalogue and, at two rows of it, airline miles
  • Up to 50 days of interest-free credit, a fraud-protection guarantee, and free utility bill payment through Visa Bill Pay

Watch out

  • WITHDRAWN — Barclays wound down its Indian consumer credit-card business and barclaycard.in no longer serves a product page
  • The interest rate was REPRICED on you every six months, anywhere from 2.5% to 3.7% a month, on your usage and credit-bureau record
  • At launch the card earned nothing at all — the page's own words were 'more rewards and benefits coming soon'
  • No lounge access, no co-brand, no travel benefit of any kind, and 3.5% on foreign currency
  • Redemption needed a minimum of 1,250 BarclaycardPoints before anything could be claimed
  • 0.80% is the whole return and there was never a bonus category — the same 2 points per ₹100 on everything, on all four cards that earned them

What these points actually fly

No live transfer route takes BarclaycardPoints into a programme that publishes an award chart. These points buy catalogue and portal redemptions, not award seats — so this page has no flight to show you, and will not invent one.
